Thanks Steve,

I'll take a look at the thread.

    Cheers for your help.

The Operations Record Book (ORB) is held in the National Archives (used to be Public Records Office, until it went up-market,) at Kew, but is often less than helpful to the likes of us. It's (very) rare to find the serial no and code letters noted by the keeper of the book (usually the Intelligence Officer, but occasionally some less-than-enthusiastic junior officer lumbered with the task.) For hard-copy files, at Kew, you need a Reader's Ticket, but the ORBs are on microfilm, and readily available; it can be a long trip, for total disappointment, though. Rawlings's books have always been my weapon of choice, since, if he doesn't list a load of codes, it's a pretty safe bet that neither does the ORB.

Hey yes please I would love a picture of the manifold! I'll be seeing the family in Guernsey next month and see if any of them have backgroung information, or better still, some photographs of Bill.

        best wishes

        Ian

          Hi Ian,

Give me your email address and I'll take some photos and post them over to you.

I've also got a picture coming soon in a newly purchased book of the Spitfire in flight with the GR-G markings. It clearly shows the pilot but I'm not sure if it's your great uncle or not? I'll scan this too and send a copy.

If you can shed any light on the markings carried by the Spitfire on the day he had to bail out I'd much appreciate it.

There is a bit of a grey area as to when the new 92 Squadron markings were used, and I'd like to build the Spitfire kit to resemble that day on the 9th Sept to display with the manifold.

Any info. or photos you may have would be fantastic to see.

          Best wishes and thanks,

          Colin.

I have been asking around the family and I'm sorry we can't turn up any pictures. Some of his other relatives are now in USA and they don't have anything either.

While we were in London we got a photo of his name on the Battle of Britain memorial on the Embankment.

                Sorry I missed this reply.

Thanks for trying though, much appreciated.

I managed to get a picture of his name myself but from the RAF Memorial down near Dover
