Hi all
i attended a presentation this afternoon about the SS Vega's vistis to Guernsey in 1945 bringing Red Cross food parcels which saved many lives.
Really interesting for me but probably not for anybody outside the Island, but one part may be of more general interest - the route Red Cross letters took. The route was quite convoluted:
London by ship to Lisbon in Portugal.
Lisbon by ship to Marseilles in Vichy France.
Marseilles to Geneva, to the HQ of the International Red Cross.
Geneva to Berlin where they were checked for inappropriate messages.
letters to POW's went from Berlin to the POW camps.
Letters to Guernsey went to Paris, then on to Guernsey.
I appreciate now why theh took so long to get delivered.
Peter
