new models purchased

Hi all went to Hannants on Saturday in London, never seen to many models in one shop. I was looking for a couple of 1/72 tanks to do for the goup build, well I got a Tiger1 and a soviet SU-100 tank destroyer which I'm hoping to do a diorama with, but not sure what yet. I also got a FGF-3 Hellcat Early version which you can have with folding or straight wings. If anyone knows how to hinge these wing so that they can be either up or down please let me know.

Hiya Colin,outside my main sphere but as my dad trained on various US types in the early fifties I've got a few references. I'm not sure exactly what you are asking (maybe I'm being a bit dim!),if you'd be good enough to clarify I might be able to dig something up.

Steve, the guy in Hannants said I can only have the wings either fixed in the folded position or fixed with the wing ready to fly. What I would like to do is somehow make the model so I can have them either up or down, hope that makes sense. So I can move them.

Allyne, I left mine in the car with the wife and when I got what I wanted at the counter they told me how much it would come to. I went out to the car and got my card and came out job done, otherwise I don't think I would have had as much control either.

I've almost bought from there twice, (online, given that i'm several hundred miles north) and given up at the last hurdle twice simply because they have the worst checkout procedure i've ever encountered.

On both occassions you go to your basket, check contents and start checkout, you are asked to login or register before you can continue with no option to checkout as a guest, after this unecessary procedure, (which many do not like to do, bulk e-mail spamming etc ensue and it's yet another loging / password to remember), you get a total minus shipping with a notification that this is calculated at the end and based on parcel size and weight, now this is all well and good but it then asks you to enter your payment card details, and this before it gives a total incl shipping.

In this day and age, (and especially for a big shop), this is unacceptable, like most shoppers I want to know my grand total before I have to divulge card info etc, I, like most internet shoppers like to shop around for best price and service, this has to include shipping costs otherwise your 'bargain' items may turn out to be not such a bargain but by the time you've gone through the whole rigmarole you are encouraged to complete the procedure even if the grand total is a little more expensive than others.

In addition to the above i contacted, them to advise them of this, (on their then incredibly hard to find contact details) and received a standard responder telling me i'd get a response which i'm still awaiting, several months later.

While i'm having a good old grumble, i'll state also, the website is appalling to navigate, has a very ameuterish layout, and often flatly refuses to switch between searches meaning you have to refresh the whole page and restart the search to fill your basket again.

Yet again, for such a big company, it's unacceptable.

It's a shame as they have a vast range of kits and goodies and the prices appear decent and, according to themselves they are a big company but I won't be purchasing anything from them in the future unless I happen to be near the shop in London at some point and can physically go in and purchase.

Hannants have recently upgraded their website. I think it's great imho. I can find exactly what i want (providing they stock it). But each to their own and all that lol

That wing fold will be tricky. The "Hellcat" wings didn't just fold up like,say,a Sea Fury. They folded up and then rotated to lie paralell with the fuselage. I assume that your early version had the same system as the later ones. Good luck if you try to do it,it would be a real challenge.

I read somewhere were a modeller had used the hinges from butchered reading glasses, the type you can get from the pound shop. Just cut them back so there was enough of the arm to fasten it to the model with leaving a very small yet strong hinge. However, you would then have to make it swivel somehow. Good luck with that one.

Didn't someone do that for an undercarriage recently. It worked pretty well.

That may be what I read Steve. At my age and mental condition, it all blends into one. Could be used with wings though, with a lot of very careful work. Cheers for putting me right on that one Steve.

It was Bobby (Rogue-one) that used the hinges from reading glasses on his Spitfire undercarriage. Ask him and I'm sure he'd let you know how he managed it. You still won't get the rotation though that would need to be some kind of ball and socket joint wouldn't it?

Hannants is a great shop, bigger now they have the unit by the RAF museum (although it was handy where they used to be - right by the tube station!). I've signed up to their website store and I don't get any junk mail - I think on pretty much every site you can opt out of news letters etc anyway.

Nice armour pieces Colin I've got the Hasagawa Tiger (without Zimmerit) and Dragon stuff is usually top notch. Look forward to seeing you in the GB

Paul, I'm confident on building the to tanks, but this will be my first attempt at a diorama, so will have to see how it turns out. Thanks Graham and Steve for the info on hinges for the wings, I to remember reading that post and I might of thought of a way of using it to make the wing rotate, only trouble is some ideas in my head don't always work. Will have to try it out first on some scrap.

Hinged/folding wings

I have a very clear recollection of building an F4-F Wildcat with folding wings about 40 years ago. It was quite large, at least 1/32 and maybe bigger. Given the date, it was probably an Airfix or Revell job.

The wings could be moved between the folded and flight positions, once built.

This movement was achieved by having a single plastic hinge set at an angle in the wing stub nearest the fuselage, with the angle so calculated as to offer a flush surface when in the flying position. It din't rotate in movement, giving only a fixed line when moved, but did give you a fair representation of the wing in each position.

Maybe a single plane hinge would give what you wanted at each end of the movement range if it were set at the correct angle in the wing?

Sorry I can't remember the kit in detail, but I have slept since then!!
