Ulster Aviation Society Open Day 2026 photos

The Ulster Aviation Society had their annual open day and I though I'd share a few photos. The full size photos are of a freshly restored Fairey Gannet, a newly obtained Fairey Swordfish (severely in need of some love), Phantom, and a Wildcat fighter (Martlet in British Service) which was fished...

    Handley Page Hampden 1/72

The build was actually quite smooth. The vintage classics can be utterly hit and miss but this one is worth a look.

    RAF Rescue launch Airfix 1/72

I did one of these a thousand years ago with the additional 20mm cannon astern and twin lewis guns at the 'shoulders' but minus those it is a very clean and graceful looking vessel. Well done.

'Trials Running' Marine Nationale in the Med, 1900 - 1/700 3D Prints

Nice to see a Pre-Dreadnought, they really could be weird and wacky.

    Handley Page Hampden 1/72

This one has been sitting on the shelf of uber-shame for about a year and I decided the time had come to finish it. Obviously a very vitage kit, but the fit was surprisingly good. Nearly had an absolute disaster with the transfers when one got knocked without me noticing and dried in wildly the...

    Papa695s Airfix 1/72 scale Hawker Typhoon Mk1B

Very nice, the ground crew crawling over it really adds to it.

BOATMANS B58 HUSTLER nukelar bombmer in 1/48 scale

Very nice, all very clean looking.

    Gloster Meteor night fighter 1/72

There's a Vampire and a English Electric Lightening in the stash, so probably.

    Gloster Meteor night fighter 1/72

Latest build - jets aren't generally my thing but for the price, I couldn't say no. For anyone with this in their pile of shame, be warned this thing needs a counter weight. The instructions don't say that it does and maybe people who do jets a lot of are thinking 'rookie mistake' but this...

    Airfix Gloster Gladiator 1/72

The recent Airfix Gloster Gladiator a long with a couple of the truly ancient RAF Personnel kit.

    DH 88 Chiffchaff....... Airfix 1/72

You can certainly see that the kit isn't to the same standard as the Spitfire but I think in a diorama it makes for an interesting looking piece. Something different certainly.

British 9.2 Inch Heavy Artillery 1/72 scale

I had never come across Streletr R as a manufacturer before and I wouldn't be left rushing out to buy it again. The instructions were... well basically on the back of the box as you can see so construction was a bit guess-and-God. I definitely gave it more time than it was worth. The figures are...

Road to Dunkirk 1/35 scale AT gun position.

One from a few years ago. British 2 pounder Anti Tank Gun in 1/35 from Vulcan scale models with a Tamiya figures for the German and British helmets. If I ever get got another one of these AT guns I'd be tempted to do a partner piece, The Road to Berlin, with the gun all rusty and the graves...

Burton Park 'Landship' Trails December 3rd 1915 . No1 Lincoln Machine.

That really is a nice piece of work, especially the detailing of the tail.

    Regrets - WW1 Diorama

One from a couple of years ago built into an old office tray that was being thrown out. The figures and trench itself are from Masterworks. After a bit of research I did up my best effort at a WW1 era notification letter and 'aged' the paper. The names on the letters are those of men from Irish...

    Tamyia 1/35 Universal Carrier

To be absolutely honest I used a little bit of Nuln Oil from my wargaming supplies. It flows into the deeper areas and makes faces with some definition quite easy.

British Felixstowe F2.A flying-boat Roden kit 1/72 scale

It is faffy but it does have the advantages of being a bit stiffer, glue will bond to it and of course it's made from a waste material so wastage isn't a consideration.

    Hello

Definitely will be doing so of some previous works.

British Felixstowe F2.A flying-boat Roden kit 1/72 scale

Probably the most complicated model that I've actually finished. Each engine was if memory serves over sixty pieces each. The Lewis guns were at least two each. The tail plane was especially... unforgiving? No the tail plane actively hated you for the presumption of attempting to built it. The...

    Tamyia 1/35 Universal Carrier

I think Tamyia has at least a couple of carrier kits, this one - recon kit - has crew figures for North Africa and North West Europe. So definitely room for variation.
