    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

I had to do the green tint again on the canopy before I could fit the switch panel and rotor brake handle. Next thing is to fit the glazing and get some paint down.

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

Another correction to the kit are the pair of door restraining stanchions for the lower personnel door. Cables are attached to the door frame and run over the tops of the stanchions and attach to the door to restrain it in position. Curiously, Airfix included them in the 1/72 kit but not here...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

When I started this build I wanted to keep it as out of the box as much as possible. Obviously the lack of seatbelts is a simple addition but there are one or two other things I want to correct/improve on. The lack of a rotor brake handle at the pilots overhead console has been addressed. I cut...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

I found this photo online - https://www.helis.com/database/cn/14721/ - no winch fitted. This looks like it might be the photo Airfix have mentioned as the aircraft code and sqn crest match. It is also recorded as being at RNAS Portland. Maybe the winch was removed for the duration of the visit...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

As I continue to add the glazing and smaller parts to this I picked up on something unique to scheme B in this kit. The rescue winch is not fitted on this version which means the holes in the fuselage for the winch frame needs to be filled. It’s no big deal but the instructions aren’t clear...

Rick’s Star Wars party family build

My wife and I are going to a Star Wars themed party next weekend. She has made a fantastic dress made in black chiffon to represent space with a yellow collar/sash to match the opening blurb subtitles of the movies. To set this off she’s also made a facinator (a fancy headband) featuring sparkly...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

I hate masking glazing! Roll on the Eduard paint masks.

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

More lumps, bumps and panels added. The engine cowls and panel over the exhausts (which in real life also cover the rotor brake and blade fold positioner disc) don’t quite align neatly, however in real life these panels are all over the place. The radome doesn’t have any guidance on the correct...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

More bits added and the problem of the nick on the RH engine exhaust cowl. I gently eased the part away enough to get a half round file in to smooth it out. The engine bay fire wall area has all been added. Maybe this area could be super detailed with scratch or AM resin engines in future...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

All stuck together and drying. Then I remembered a little nick in number 2 engine exhaust cowl I forgot to fix.

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

That’s the cabin inner shell glued to the cabin floor. I was going the get the fuselage buttoned up tonight then realised I hadn’t painted the inside walls of the cockpit. A job for tomorrow before I head south on a business trip. Something occurred to me as I dry fitted the interior to the...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

Interior done and glued together, just the dipping sonar to add and a touch up here and there. I managed to break one of the delicate collective levers. A neutral was has been applied all over to give depth.

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

Well, my first attempt at the seat belts failed miserably. The 1mm tape stuck to the paper and seemed too wide anyway. For my second go I used 0.75 mm tape laid out on my cutting mat and painted black with a Posca pen. This was cut to appropriate lengths for the five point harnesses and...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

The time has come to tackle the fuselage window inserts to fill the apertures not required for this mark of Sea King. The two that fill the aft cabin windows have a subtle curve & taper that makes it virtually impossible to fit incorrectly. I did one window at a time to ensure no mix ups...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

Detail painting has been done elsewhere in the interior. I’ve also weathered the floor of the cockpit and cabin. All the sonar and radar racks and seats are dry fitted to check the weathering looks in context. I checked this through the open doors too. All these parts have been varnished ready...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

I add detail to the instrument panels using apps a pens, easy peasy. But I’m thinking to myself, as I look at a reference photo of a HAS5 centre console, it’s different. Because I used the wrong centre console from the kit. Doh!

https://uk.airfix.com/community/blog-and-news/workbench/stealthy-new-sea-king-announcement Do you mean this part? It’s assembled and painted ready to fit.

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

The cabin floor has its first shot of paint. I based the black anti slip areas on just one photo reference and what looked right…and forgot to do the rear AV bay cover. The cabin walls are done too. These are two different shades of grey. The head lining material is thin plastic sheet while...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

I forgot to add this image of the cabin inner shell to illustrate the ejector pin holes needing filled. More work on the main rotor head with the pitch change rods and horns fitted.

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

More progress on the sponsons. These are a multi part assembly which is why I’ve done it over a few nights. This panel over to top of the LH sponson was a bit proud and required some trimming of the LG compartment below. A little bit of filler was needed. The main rotor head was started...
