    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

Going back a step to the main rotors, these have a couple of decals on each side. I pinched the marking out sketch from the Airfix Model World magazine build article. These lines are used to align the blade lifting sling at the centre of balance of the blades during removal and installation...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

Just about done. A touch of silver for the pilots mirrors, some thread for the HF aerial and personnel door restraint. I’m contemplating adding a hold open strut for the upper personnel door and a grab handle on the cabin door frame,

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

Most of the weathering and lots of small details added including the tail fold warning flag.

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

Doing some of the smaller details. The High intensity strobe light needs a bit of sanding down of the sprue gate, I stuck it to a blob of Blu Tak while I did this to keep it in position and from pinging across the room. The tail fold joint is well detailed but one thing missing is the unlock...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

Speckle time. That decal for the engine exhaust is just awful.

What did you fly in today?

My first trip in an A380, ever. After 18 years working for the company that built the main gears for this jet I finally get to see what all the fuss is about.

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

I’ve got all the basic airframe painted in Tamira XF-83 Medium Sea Grey. The next step will be painting some of the smaller bits, aerials, tyres, exhausts etc before a coat of varnish. But before I can make that progress I will be taking a break from the bench due to travel commitments. I’ll be...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

I have this photo of the bean tin found in the Haynes Sea King HU5 manual.

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

We’ve made it to the paint shop. Before the grey I applied black over the cockpit framing first so that any glimpse through the glazing won’t show the grey fuselage colour. But I have mislaid my other jar of Tamiya XF-83.

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

I have a mystery to figure out, what is this round fitting under the lower personnel door? I don’t recall seeing this on the HAR3’s I worked on and all references I can find suggest it was plated over on later marks of Sea King. Not a big deal but there is no reference in the instructions and...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

I had to do the green tint again on the canopy before I could fit the switch panel and rotor brake handle. Next thing is to fit the glazing and get some paint down.

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

Another correction to the kit are the pair of door restraining stanchions for the lower personnel door. Cables are attached to the door frame and run over the tops of the stanchions and attach to the door to restrain it in position. Curiously, Airfix included them in the 1/72 kit but not here...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

When I started this build I wanted to keep it as out of the box as much as possible. Obviously the lack of seatbelts is a simple addition but there are one or two other things I want to correct/improve on. The lack of a rotor brake handle at the pilots overhead console has been addressed. I cut...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

I found this photo online - https://www.helis.com/database/cn/14721/ - no winch fitted. This looks like it might be the photo Airfix have mentioned as the aircraft code and sqn crest match. It is also recorded as being at RNAS Portland. Maybe the winch was removed for the duration of the visit...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

As I continue to add the glazing and smaller parts to this I picked up on something unique to scheme B in this kit. The rescue winch is not fitted on this version which means the holes in the fuselage for the winch frame needs to be filled. It’s no big deal but the instructions aren’t clear...

Rick’s Star Wars party family build

My wife and I are going to a Star Wars themed party next weekend. She has made a fantastic dress made in black chiffon to represent space with a yellow collar/sash to match the opening blurb subtitles of the movies. To set this off she’s also made a facinator (a fancy headband) featuring sparkly...

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

I hate masking glazing! Roll on the Eduard paint masks.

    Rick’s 1/48 Airfix Sea King HAS5

More lumps, bumps and panels added. The engine cowls and panel over the exhausts (which in real life also cover the rotor brake and blade fold positioner disc) don’t quite align neatly, however in real life these panels are all over the place. The radome doesn’t have any guidance on the correct...
