    Gary's Fujimi 1/72 Phantom FGR.2 'Firebird'

So masking tape is off and I've given the wings and part of the fuz a coat of gloss varnish to protect the paint while I do the rest of the painting. Not sure I'm that happy with it - the gloss varnish shows every imperfection, but I hope that they will be less visible

Getting somewhere at last. Once more coat on the fuz still to go, plus some touching up to do plus the metal areas around the exhaust. And of course the nose cone!

The airframe is also ready and has had two undercoats and the underside has had the first finishing coat. In the other photo you can see the brass replacement pitot tubes on the vertical fin. Painting the airframe is a slow process because as it is hand painted it will need 3 or 4 thin top...

The replacement Reskit exhaust pipes and the tail planes are also ready to be fitted.

Sidewinders and Skyflash missiles have also been painted and ready for decals.

At last some progress and some photos. The fuel tanks, inner pylons and gun pod have all been painted and given a gloss coat ready for the decals. Not too happy with the finish on the gun pod, but the decals will hide the imperfections I think.

    Gary's Fujimi 1/72 Phantom FGR.2 'Firebird'

Hi Richard, sorry to hear about your back and leg problems. Yes, the ejector pin marks are a right pain, not only in the air intakes but also on the wheels and a few other places. Things like that let you see that this is an old kit. Couldn't look myself in the eye over the front wheels so...

    Gary's Fujimi 1/72 Phantom FGR.2 'Firebird'

While waiting for the filler to dry I drove myself cross eyed painting the very small nose wheels (which look better in real life than in the photos , honestly!!) the main wheels and begun with some prima coats on the fuel tanks, sidewinder pylons and tail planes.

Excellent choice Richard, looking forward to seeing some pics in due course! Are you going to do a build log?? In the meantime I have been making a bit of progress. Added the intakes and despite some careful fitting still could not get away without a bit of filler here and there.

Work is still progressing.... been painting lots of the boring white bits like the u/c, u/c doors and wells, intakes etc, etc. And somewhere in here are the parts for 4 Skyflash missiles to replace those in the kit.

    Gary's Fujimi 1/72 Phantom FGR.2 'Firebird'

The FGR.2 kit does not include sidewinder rails, so I ''borrowed"' these from an Fujimi FG.1 kit I had in my stash. When I come around to building that kit, I'll either have to source the missing rails from somewhere (I think Aerocraft make a set of inner and outer pylons intended for the...

    Gary's Fujimi 1/72 Phantom FGR.2 'Firebird'

After a week on vacation, and then another few days travelling due to family commitments I have finally had some chance to work on the Phantom. Have finished of the ejection seats and the next step is to add the HUD and mask and fit the canopy. The seats are ok, but given the scale and the...

    Gary's Fujimi 1/72 Phantom FGR.2 'Firebird'

Wings now attached along with the inside of the air intakes and splitter plates, with no serious fit issues. Next step is to do some remedial work - a bit of filler on the end of the flaps, vertical fin by the ILS antenna, mold releases marks inside the air intakes etc. After that I can pain the...

    Gary's Fujimi 1/72 Phantom FGR.2 'Firebird'

Not much progress over the last few days, just been adjusting the fuselage to accept the Reskit exhaust pipes.

Sorry about the poor photos, made them quickly with the phone. Here's one more showing the read brace that I need to trim.

    Gary's Fujimi 1/72 Phantom FGR.2 'Firebird'

In some of the reviews I had read over this kit, it was said that there are fit problems between the wing and the lower front fuselage, so I have been doing at lot of test fitting. I was pleasantly surprised to find that in fact the fit was pretty good.

    Gary's Fujimi 1/72 Phantom FGR.2 'Firebird'

Fitting the cockpit inside the fuselage proved to be a bit difficult as the side panels on the rear cockpit are way to thick, so they had to be thinned down. Als the inside of the fuz also required quite a bit of fettling before I could get the cockpit in. I ended up with this, not perfect but...

    Gary's Fujimi 1/72 Phantom FGR.2 'Firebird'

As this is an early release in the Fujimi Phantom range it does not feature separate flaps. As drooped flaps seems to be a feature of most FGR2's when on the ground I thought I would cut these out and reposition them. This turned out to be relatively simple, but I still need to do a bit of...

    Gary's Fujimi 1/72 Phantom FGR.2 'Firebird'

The first step as ever was the cockpit which has some nice raised details which can be painted or decaled. I ended up using the decals for the side consoles and a bit of imagination to dry brush to instrument panels. I ended up with this, which I think will be ok given that I will be not be...

    Gary's Fujimi 1/72 Phantom FGR.2 'Firebird'

It wasn't really my intention to do a build log for this model but when I mentioned I was building it on another thread a few people showed some interest, so here we go...... Ok this is a relatively old kit, dating back to 1987 and was one of the earlier Phantom releases from Fujimi. As such...
