Tamiya Team Suzuki Ecstar GSX-RR '20

Some limited progress over the weekend. I tried some carbon fibre decals on parts of the frame and brush painted some of the details while trying to get the colours correct with the reference photos. I also made a start on the swing arm and did the dreaded wheel decals. They're probably the...

These wheel decals are my nemesis. I hope they put up less of a fight than the last ones!

I've ended up with this after a bit of experimentation. I don't really think it's possible to replicate gold leaf with paint but I think this is a reasonably good effect.

How do I even get close to this colour for the fuel tank? Answers on a postcard. I was thinking maybe clear yellow then orange over a bright silver base? There might even be a hint of green there

I think the colours aren't far away from the reference photos. The brown for the sump/rocker cover took a moment to get right. I had some foil tape left over from putting in insulation in the house so I've cut some thin strips of that to look like jubilee clips.

I don't think this is far off

There's loads of reference photos available for this one so I'll be trying to get colours closer to the real bike. The front calipers look like the shadow chrome effect you used to get on the old BMW M5 wheels. I'll be trying dusting a bright silver over gloss black to try and replicate it.

This might be a slow one. The weather is starting to improve so all the outside jobs are getting done. I'll get to it when I can. I've never done photo etch before so we'll see how that goes. I got the front fork set which includes a few photo etch parts and I went for the lazy option of pre...

I do like the Kawasaki green. This is my third bike now and I'm learning from my mistakes.

Terrible photos. I'll take better ones in the morning. I think it just needs it's clothes on and it's finished

That purple clear coat turned up. I think it worked quite well on the exhausts. It's lacquer based though so it does have a bit of fumes with it

I've managed to lose the cap nut for the steering stem again. This happened on my last model. It goes on here to cover the screw: I've fashioned this out of a bit of sprue to cover the hole. Hopefully it's not too obvious.

The body panels are more or less there. The pile of bits in the box is getting smaller. There's just the small fiddly bits left now.

I got the lacquer on but it was still rough over some of the decals so I flattened it back with some 600 grit emery and did another coat. The finish is ok but I might go for it with some T-cut later to get a better finish.

That was a trial. There's some bits where the black doesn't meet up so I'll have to brush paint a few little bits of black. I might even get some lacquer on tonight after tea.

It's nice still weather today so I got the green bits done. The spray paints are far too toxic to use in the house. I've used the mica green from zero paints. It works well straight out of the bottle so there's no need to faff around with thinners. I'll need to try and get decals and lacquer...

I had half an hour while the dinner was cooking so I quickly got the front mudguard decals on and lacquered.
