    First diorama - The Choice

OK, I'm one of the world's great procrastinators, but I've run out of excuses not to start on this. The three figures are painted, and I don't want to start building the feature tree until the base is at least part-completed. So start on the base I must. I started by cutting a 12mm ply...

    The Choice

OK, so this has been a real struggle. Lots of issues with priming, lots more issues with skin tones - and I'm still not wholly satisfied with the end result. However, I'm hoping that the flaws are more obvious to me than other viewers, and that once she's in the finished diorama even I might be...

    Latest Acquisitions (2023)

Just in from 4D Model Shop - for my first-ever diorama! Four sheets of Styrofoam, a bag of Sculptamold, two flexible mixing bowls (for mixing batches of Sculptamold), a couple of packs of tongue depressors (to stir and apply it), two Woodland Scenics rock moulds, some craft foam clay (to go in...

    Making chilli sauce

Back to the sauce. 48 hours in, and fermentation has definitely begun. There's a distinctive spicy, fruity smell in the kitchen and, if I press down on the glass puck keeping it all submerged, co2 bubbles up.

    I love making curry

I bet that's good. Here's my favourite curry cookbook, even though I'm not a Hindu and I do eat fish! :hungry:

    Making chilli sauce

Kendal is too small (and, dare I say it, too Anglo-Saxon) to have any Asian mini-markets, so I have to wait until I'm somewhere more diverse to get chillis in bulk at a sensible price for this chilli sauce. I stock up on dried pulses at the same time. And yes, I do cook my own curries! I...

    Making chilli sauce

Thanks for the clarification, Tim. All makes sense to me! I also make chutney and jam. Or rather marmalade - tons of it!

    Making chilli sauce

I don't think it really matters. You roughly chop the chillis, pack them tightly in a jar and cover with the brine. So the amount of brine you need to add depends on how tightly you pack the chilli pieces. How salty does your brine need to be? That's largely a matter of taste, I believe. Here's...

    Making chilli sauce

If you love commercial hot sauces (Encona, Sriracha etc.) you might consider making your own. I've started doing this, it's dead easy and absolutely delicious. My first batch was made with Jalapeño peppers and garlic. You roughly chop the ingredients, cover them in brine and leave them to...

    The Choice

I nearly always do eyes first too, Tim! I've been all over the place with this figure - outside-in on lots of it, and I'm going to have to do loads of touching up, I've badly rubbed paint off and sloshed paint over finished bits. Inside-outwards is definitely the way to go!

    The Choice

Trying to wrestle her face into some sort of order - pushing paint around, as Tim says.

    The Choice

So, after a LOT of umming and ahhing, I finally stripped off her face, using care and airbrush cleaner, as per @Tim Marlow - and of course, it worked an absolute treat. Great tip, Tim - I do love this forum! In the meantime, I worked on her hair, skirt, beads and bodice. Her face is stripped...

    Advice on cat painting, please

I've been given a garden ornament to repaint, and I'm looking for colour scheme suggestions. I've been given free-rein - I could give it tiger stripes, paint it sparkly pink, whatever. Any suggestions gratefully received!

    The end of Alclad 2

No one's mentioned Molotow Liquid Chrome - gives an amazing chrome finish. Here it is, brush painted. I understand it can be airbrushed as well.

    The Choice

I'm struggling with pale skin tones on this next figure. I used some old, part-dried paint on the face (why?! I was asking myself almost as I used it - one of those mistakes you know you're making, but can't help yourself for some reason) and that has ruined the smooth finish there - it'll now...

    Latest Acquisitions (2023)

Just arrived, very quickly indeed from Panzerwrecks, is this monster tome. It's absolutely stuffed with theory, ideas and techniques - and it cost an arm and a leg. Like many on here, I've been wowed by the dioramas produced by Martin on the NightShift YouTube channel. Having finished his...

    The Choice

Thanks everyone. Ha ha, no, normal sized hands here. She's nominally 75mm scale, but because she's an elf she's actually 50mm from the soles of her feet to her eyeballs. The cape did take some time - I'm discovering that freehand is labour-intensive, with a great deal of continuous correcting...

    The Choice

So that's the second figure (of three) completed. Her name is Kyra, and she kicks ass.

    The Choice

I'm enjoying painting this little one. A tiny green gemstone at her throat. Fabric effect shamelessly stolen from Roman Lappat's painting of the same figure.
