1/35 Nuts Planet - 'Sludge Lagoons'

    This one's an absolute shocker.

1/35 Nuts Planet - 'Sludge Lagoons'

After a long break I'm getting my eye back in painting these three dystopian near-future 'local guardians'. Don't point out the mould lines, please.

    The Choice

The Beast crested a rise from his blasted valley and came face to face with two warriors. Why did they not flee? No screaming, no running - not even a glimmer of fear! Who should he devour first? In the darkest recesses of his tiny brain a strange emotion flickered. Fear - not theirs, but his...

    First diorama - The Choice

For better or worse, this is finished. Unfortunately I can only see its many weaknesses. Compositionally I almost couldn't have got it more wrong. I was trying to create tension between the three figures, with The Beast wrongfooted by the two warriors giving him a dilemma of which way to turn...

    Another disappearing act

Hi all. I feel I should apologise for being entirely absent from the forum for the last several months. My life has changed in all sorts of ways over the past year (most of it seriously disruptive, none of it entirely negative and much of it wonderfully positive), such that I've not so much as...

    First diorama - The Choice

Using Deluxe Materials' Model Lite lightweight filler for the substantial gaps. Just added some bridging filler to begin with to stabilise the sides, then filling in with more Model Lite once the bridging has gone off. The filler can be tinted with inks, which makes it a bit runnier, but well...

    First diorama - The Choice

Boxing in with balsa sheet. Some big gaps to fill. I think maybe I should have done this earlier.

    First diorama - The Choice

Static grass on, and painted black. And then resprayed. And the first of several fiddly laser cut paper ferns.

    I bought a new boat

Big STOP on model making for me over the past couple of months. We all know it happens, so I won't apologise or anything like that, but I think I'm back at it. The other stuff that got in the way was: unexpected retirement, holidays, and the purchase of a new boat. For the last ten years me...

    First diorama - The Choice

So, another massive pause while life intervened but, almost on a whim, I sat down and started on this again. I've added those foam rocks and painted the whole thing black. The rocks looked ridiculously obvious, and I'm amazed how they've integrated into the landscape just by painting the...

    Wasn't sourdough a lockdown thing?

Always late to the party - I've just started learning to bake it. Lots of fun, tastes delicious!

    Latest Acquisitions (2023)

Inspired by the flats at Figure World North 2023, I purchased this from El Greco Miniatures. I don't know what scale it is - the panel is c. 15cms x 11cms. Great sculpting, but the finish leaves a little to be desired, with one or two tiny bubbles, and some unfortunate miscasting right in the...

    Figure World North 2023

No gongs for my entries - no surprise, the standard was awesome. Here's my haul:

    Figure World North 2023

I've got to show you these 90mm(?) commedia dell'arte flat figures. Right up my street, and phenomenally well painted.

    Figure World North 2023

I'm already £50 poorer! I won't take a lot of pictures, but I can tell you the standard is sky-high. For example, the freehand on this, and the expressiveness of the face is fabulous - perfectly rendered, just like a Greek icon.

    Figure World North 2023

I've just arrived at Figure World North 2023, at the Galtres Centre, Easingwold. I've submitted four entries to the competition (something I said I'd never do!) and I've just had to come out for a coffee and a lie down - the quality of entries is awesome. At first glance the show looks...

Retirement has arrived with a bump

Thanks for the VERY kind words, folks! Sounds like we're all enjoying retirement in our own ways. I just spent a glorious day with one of my nephews and his girlfriend in Little Langdale - fell walking, wild swimming, and dinner in the back garden of a tiny cottage looking out at this view of...

Retirement has arrived with a bump

What's on the bench? Not a clue! I just can't bring myself to sit indoors in this blazing weather. We've also been sailing in the Golfe de Morbihan in southern Brittany - and I've retired! I hadn't been meaning to, but my employers acted like such monumental numbskulls that I really had no...

    First diorama - The Choice

There's been a great big pause on the construction of this. It started when I couldn't decide on the best order of assembly - every option compromised some element of the build, so I just stopped. And then couldn't start again. Finally I realised I just had to get stuck in and hope for the...
