    First diorama - The Choice

Here's the tree, with foliage on (postiche and fine scatter). I've used subdued colours - no brilliant greens. I may have been too cautious in this.

    First diorama - The Choice

Here's the second coat once it's cured. You can see it has shrunk right back again. I'm not happy about how closely the main trunk is conforming to the cylinder of dowel beneath - so I've added some foam clay to buttress the roots and reduce the regular cylindricality (is that even a word?)...

    First diorama - The Choice

I've just added a second coat on the main trunk - you can see it's pretty gloopy, runny stuff. I'll take another pic once it's gone off, so you can see how it shrinks back. It has certainly given a lot more structure to the armature - much less flex. The pot is a bit of a bugger to open - the...

    First diorama - The Choice

After a first layer of Flexi-Bark™. This is messy stuff to apply, but it should get easier with subsequent layers. Still some wire showing, although fairly minimal due to the fine grade of wire I used. The finish is very bobbly but I can sand it down a bit once I have sufficient on.

    First diorama - The Choice

This landed on my mat while I was at work - I think it's the Flexi-bark™ at last!

Langy's 'The Mekon', 1/16 scale figure by Mooncrest models.

Spot on advice from @Tim Marlow, of course. One other thing to consider is that, where the crease points directly up to the light source then it's the very deepest part of the crease that reflects the light, like this:

    Latest Acquisitions (2023)

My first diorama build has stalled while I wait for some Flexi-Bark™ to turn up and, although I hate having more than one project on the go at any one time, I got fed up with waiting and bought these from El Greco Miniatures. Tisiphone is one of The Furies of Roman/Greek mythology - maiden...

    Airbrush spray booth

Benchvent 300SD recently purchased here, and I absolutely love it. Robustly built, quiet, effective at eliminating nasty smells and a sensible size (doesn't feel like you're spraying into a shoebox). Having said that, I do occasionally find myself forgetting to switch it on before I start...

    While away the time :-D

One way to avoid the spiral into obsessive perfectionism is to choose fantasy subjects - that way there is no 'right' or 'wrong', it's just a question of doing what you think is appropriate. Another release from endlessly fretting about skill and accuracy is to acknowledge that we're making...

    Advice on cat painting, please

I've stalled on wire tree making while I wait for some Flexi-Bark™ to arrive. So I've just had an absolute blast painting this. Took about four hours start to finish - no pressure, slap on the paint and have some fun!

The Sculptamold is still not fully dry (our home is pretty cool), but the wire bending for the tree is complete. Next step is to soak it in dilute PVA to consolidate the individual paper-covered wires. I'll possibly add some IPA to the mix to help it penetrate.

    I've started on the tree.

    First diorama - The Choice

Thanks for the advice @wotan. Re. empty spaces, I'm intending to make a really large tree. Like, REALLY large! I want it to dominate the scene, pushing viewers to really inspect in detail what's going on beneath it. I've taken tons of pictures, but this tree, with its big, intricate trunk and...

    First diorama - The Choice

I should say that it looks like I'm just slapping this all together, but there has been plenty of forward planning - lots of this going on: That planning seems absolutely vital to me. Without it, I might've missed that my intended front view would've presented one of the figures to viewer like...

    First diorama - The Choice

This is the arrangement I'm going for - the jar is where the tree will go.

    First diorama - The Choice

I decided to whack on some Sculptamold, just to get a feel for it and set up the underlying structure. Once this has gone off I can start thinking about the bare rock outcrops. I added some burnt umber acrylic paint - but clearly not nearly enough! Still, it should ensure there's no completely...

    First diorama - The Choice

I've not got a hot wire cutter, so the foam's been cut with a craft knife and the sides are far from straight! I've got some balsa sheet on order to finish the sides - I'm hoping that'll cover up these sins!

    First diorama - The Choice

I'm also wondering whether I should coat the styrofoam in PVA - I'd like to use the flexibility of the rocks to bend them around a bit, but to do so I really need to use cyano - and I think that'll attack the Styrofoam. The foam clay rock is weird stuff - like a damp, greasy-feeling, slightly...
