    Steve's 1/32 Special Hobby P-39

I thought I'd better start a thread to encourage me to get on with this one! I seem to have a big pile of nice looking, if slightly hard/brittle plastic: I have bought some masks and also have the kit decals to have a go at: Of course there's some of this Bl*$dy stuff: And finally this...

Karl & Andrews Soviet wingy thing GB Chat thread.

This will be my effort for this GB. I've got a pilot and will probably try to acquire some masks/markings as I go along. I don't know much about the VVS, so I was surprised to discover that no fewer than 4,600 P-39s were delivered to the Soviet Union and that five of the Soviet Union’s top...

    Tamiya 1/72 Bf 109 E-3

Here’s some ‘what iffery’ from me, something I rarely indulge in! The first ‘what if?’ was simply me deciding to build the little 1/72 scale Tamiya Bf 109 E-3. I rarely build this scale, it’s really a bit of a stop gap before I start something for the ‘Russian’ group build. It turns out that...

    Battle of Britain diary

Battle of Britain Day 2023 I'm going to write a brief addendum or maybe appendix to this thread, addressing the issue of overclaiming. This is not in any way having a go at the pilots (on all sides) who made erroneous claims. The vast majority were made in good faith and the errors simply...

1/32 Mitsubishi A5M 'Claude' (Andy's WWII Japanese Aircraft GB)

Here's the completed model. The person most impressed that this is being contributed to this most excellent GB on 3/9 is the contributor himself :) Anyway, without further ado, here's one of my virtual walkarounds: Big thanks to Andy for proposing the GB. This definitely got me out...

    Mitsubishi A5M4 'Claude'

I've had a few days off due to a dodgy back, but I've managed some short spells at the bench. I'm very nearly finished, streaking across the line (fully clothed) with time to spare! This is a bad snap of where I'm at and will be the end of this thread. I'll take some 'proper' pictures and post...

    Mitsubishi A5M4 'Claude'

I sneaked a morning and got all the sprayed markings done. The engine isn't in yet, hence the cowling being attached by tape. I should be able to get some varnish on this evening and maybe the few decals required tomorrow - if I can sneak an hour or so. Next week is another screeching halt...

    Mitsubishi A5M4 'Claude'

I've now got the first paint on this one. The aircraft were painted in an aluminium dope, they were not in a so called 'natural metal finish'. By all accounts this paint yellowed quite badly, something I have attempted to replicate. Though the whole upper surface is roughly similar to the naked...

    Mitsubishi A5M4 'Claude'

I've got the wings on, which was an interesting project. There's still a little remedial work to be done but I feel like I've now cracked this kit. I've already tried the engine, which fits quite nicely, and I don't foresee any more time consuming issues. It's just as well, because I won't have...

    Mitsubishi A5M4 'Claude'

Well this is fun! I've spent at least a couple of hours fettling the cockpit to fit the fuselage. This is mainly because the resin parts, which are jolly nice, also seem to have been made for a slightly larger scale. Anyway, I eventually persuaded the two halves to fit together. This has...

    Mitsubishi A5M4 'Claude'

I've now got some basic paint on the various bits and finished the engine. I left a P-E part which I think was purporting to be an ignition loom off the engine as it was horrible and brought nothing to the party. I thought it weird that the instrument panel was just the cockpit colour apart...

    Mitsubishi A5M4 'Claude'

I'm off and running, or staggering drunkenly is a none to certain direction. I've primed the various major parts of the cockpit and engine assemblies. These two have used up all the resin bits (the regular polystyrene equivalents come with the kit too) and a substantial portion of the P-E...

    Trumpeter 1/32 Kittyhawk IIIA (P-40M).

I can’t comment on how accurate the kit is, but it went together very nicely. The only drama was self- inflicted by my decision to pose the model in flight, meaning with a retracted undercarriage. Build is here: https://www.scale-models.co.uk/threads/trumpeter-1-32-p-40-m-war-hawk.41903/ There...

    Trumpeter 1/32 P-40 M 'War Hawk'

I've got this to the point where there is really only a few bits to add and, of course, a bit of weathering. I'll leave this thread here and post the completed model in a new one as soon as it's actually completed.

    Trumpeter 1/32 P-40 M 'War Hawk'

I've started spraying some markings. The kit decals, at least the national markings, are not much good anyway. I made my own South African orange by mixing the red and yellow used for RAF markings...which is probably what the South Africans did too.

    Trumpeter 1/32 P-40 M 'War Hawk'

Made some progress and have got the basic camouflage scheme on the model, which just needs a couple of edges to be tidied up a little.. I followed the Curtiss drawings for the pattern, not the instructions. The underside colour is my estimation of Curtiss 'Light Blue 27' which was supposed to...

    Mitsubishi A5M4 'Claude'

So this will be my hapless victim for Andy's Group Build. I'll be using the 1/32 scale kit from Special hobby (which might be my first mistake!) It's a typical Special hobby kit, a plastic bag with some plastic, some resin which looks nice, and everyone's favourite, some P-E. I have to...

    Trumpeter 1/32 P-40 M 'War Hawk'

I've been making the most of the time I have this week and have been fairly zooming along. This is helped by the kit being fairly basic and also very nicely fitting. Whatever issues the kit may or may not have, it does fit together very well. Here I have just sat the fuselage on the wings with...

    Trumpeter 1/32 P-40 M 'War Hawk'

I've done the cockpit, apart from painting the headrest, and have temporarily inserted my volunteer pilot, who is not quite finished. I would say that this is a couple of pictures of the not terribly good cockpit, but the pilot is doing a great job of covering up its shortcomings!

    Trumpeter 1/32 P-40 M 'War Hawk'

Whilst waiting for stuff to arrive I've been educating myself on these aircraft in British/Commonwealth service and trying to work out what this one really looked like. Here's my conclusions for anyone interested. Trumpeter have definitely got this completely wrong, whether I'm completely right...
