Two Hurricanes Complete (Fly and Revell kits, 1/32)

So here are the finished articles. What you see here and in the build thread (https://www.scale-models.co.uk/threads/a-tale-of-two-hurricanes.41482/) is what’s in the boxes with the sole exception of an aftermarket harness in the Revell model. I know that this is not supposed to be a...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

I feel like I'm milking this, but I promise it's not the case! Number two is done apart from a rear view mirror which pinged off into the ether. Replacement from the spares is a work in progress, i.e. covered in wet paint. I've also added the rear view mirror to the other Hurricane...that one I...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

Hurricane number one (Fly) is built. I will do some very light weathering once number two (Revell) is also built. The undercarriage was an 'interesting' build and is quite fragile, particularly the tailwheel. Definitely no vroooming across the table top :)

    A tale of two Hurricanes

I've started decals on the Fly kit. Both sets of decals conform very well. I don't know who makes the respective sets, but for ease of handling and in every other respect the ones in the Revell kit are better.

Still doing these! I've had a couple of early finishes over the bank holiday, meaning that this evening I've managed to complete the decals on one of the models (Revell). I have masks for this but in the spirit of fairness I've used the decals, as I will be doing on the Fly kit. Upside down...

Just by way of contrast, I think these must have been masked:

    A tale of two Hurricanes

The A and B schemes were simply mirror images of each other. The theory was that alternating aircraft on the production line would be produced in the two schemes. This does not mean that even and odd serials alternate (as legend has it) because aircraft were produced in serial blocks for...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

Some more formation flying! I've managed to squeeze a few hours in, though this might be it for a while. Colour perception eh! That Dark Earth is the same; same paint from the same bottle, sprayed over the same black primer with a similar white pre-shade.

    A tale of two Hurricanes

A tale of two undersides! The Fly kit is being built as Z2827 of the Malta Night Fighting Unit, coded as 'M', based at Ta'Quali in mid 1941. The kit instructions call for a Night (black) underside, which just seems wrong. There were some Hurricanes finished in overall Night, but images I have...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

The tale of two Hurricanes does continue, albeit slowly as I've been busier than I would like. I have managed to get both aircraft primed and ready for some 'proper' paint, after a couple of minor fixes. Unfortunately, I am going to struggle to get that done in the next couple of weeks as I now...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

Time for some formation flying! The two do have slightly different shapes. I'm afraid if you want someone measuring a millimetre here or there I'm not that guy. I would say that the Revell model (lighter coloured plastic) has a slightly bulkier or heavier look to it. The most noticeable...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

I wasn't going to do an update until I'd made some progress with the Revell kit, but I have come to a point that illustrates the difference between the two and why direct comparisons, though inevitable, are always going to be unfair. Remember this? The fuselage of the Fly Hurricane, ready...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

I've managed to squeeze in a bit of bench time so far this weekend. I've been pushing on with the Fly kit and have suddenly realised that I need to stop that one and get on with the other one. It's hard to do because you always see that one more thing you could do, rather than leaving something...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

I had an unexpected afternoon off today, so, being at a bit of a loose end, I got the wings on the Fly Hurricane. This was in fact a bit of a challenge. So far I have got the upper surface looking pretty good: Oh, I fixed the fin too. There's still a bit of faffing to be done on the...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

Final update for a couple of days (at least) due once again to the requirement to earn a living. There is an issue with the top of the fin to fix. This is just a poorly formed fuselage half, but nothing too difficult. There's also a little bit of sorting on the underside to do. This is at the...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

This post is probably only relevant to those who already have one of the Fly kits, or fancy taking a swing at one. I understand, via the wonders of the internet, that some people struggle to fit this very nice looking resin wheel well into the kit. You can probably see that this is a dry fit...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

I've had limited time of late, but I now have both models at close to the same stage of construction. You can make your own minds up about the two offices! Next, I'll turn my attention back to the Fly kit.

    A tale of two Hurricanes

Back to the job in hand. I've got the Revell cockpit almost done. There are a couple of parts which need decals (instrument panel and compass) which I will add later. There's far more in the Revell cockpit and it is not difficult to build. It's why comparisons are so tricky. This is a kit from...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

Today I have received some paint masks from Australia (DN Models, but the cheapest I could find them was from an outfit called BNA Model World) and a Sutton Harness from the Czech Republic (Martin Bobeck/HGW odels). They were ordered on the same day! The world really is becoming smaller. Does...

    A tale of two Hurricanes

And we're off with the Revell kit: This was very easy, childishly easy compared to the other kit. First impressions are positive. There's a little bit of flash but the molding seems good, if a bit soft in places. More importantly, the pieces seem to fit together!
