    Trumpeter 1/32 Lightning P-38L-5-LO

I have not been posting as frequently on this for two reasons, less bench time and it’s slow going cleaning up seams as I go. While the twin boom structure is reasonably strong I cannot sand too rigorously as it creaks and it would be easy to break. So the main airframe is complete except...

    Trumpeter 1/32 Lightning P-38L-5-LO

More progress. Firstly I paints three coloured lights, red, green and amber. The green one pinged off and I have no idea where it went, so I fixed the other two and used Micro Kristal Klear on the middle one which will dry clear. My plan is that once the model is painted, to paint the...

    Trumpeter 1/32 Lightning P-38L-5-LO

Fitting the cockpit into the two fuselage halves is a little complex but with some dry fitting to work out how to best fit it, it goes in well with no fit issues whatsoever. Lots of clamping is needed.

    Trumpeter 1/32 Lightning P-38L-5-LO

My bench time has been a little limited over the last week so progress is slow. That said the cockpit is largely done, some elements will be needed to be done late in the build. A couple of pics. I really do recommend avoiding the Eduard sets for this kit, both the seatbelts and ip...

Here are the parts put together. The dials really don’t show very well at all with Trumpy’s system. I still have some detail painting to do and will post a finished pic when done.

    Trumpeter 1/32 Lightning P-38L-5-LO

This is the kit ip. A clear plastic part that needs painting black, a piece of film that I have cut to fit and a back panel that will need painting white so, hopefully, the dials will show through. It is a pretty pathetic thing compared to what you can do with other 32 slaw kits and/or 3D...

    Trumpeter 1/32 Lightning P-38L-5-LO

I opened the Eduard photo etch instrument panel set. I did have a go, at least to see if I could use some of it to get a better ip than the kit offers. But, sadly, for me it’s a total waste of time, totally impractical as it requires lots of bending and lots of small etch that need gluing on...

The nose wheel floor has a lot of shallow extractor pin marks. I used Mr Dissolved Putty on these. Incidentally that photo initially failed to load but I managed it by emailing it to me and reducing its size that way. I really don’t know why suddenly this has become an issue.

    Trumpeter 1/32 Lightning P-38L-5-LO

After sanding the Mr Dissolved Putty I did another check by holding up the seams to the light. In spots, here and there, are faint traces of the seam so this time I used black Ammo slow dry c.a. This will be the final seam treatment, the next time will be after a black primer is applied when...

    Trumpeter 1/32 Lightning P-38L-5-LO

Photos are currently very hit and miss, one has uploaded, the others did not. Tried it several times and yet it still happens. I have no idea what’s happening. Above is the only one that loaded. I have sanded the seams working through different grades of sanding sponge starting at 400...

I have been working on the engines. As the aircraft will be closed up I am not bothering to paint them. I will say that if you want to have open panels and show the engines, with a little work they could look great.

I expect to start this tomorrow. The box The aftermarket. I don’t expect to use the Montex Masks apart from the canopy masks as 1 Man Army masks will cater for the rest and are just about the best in the market. Finally. as I usually do, a picture of the cleaned up workbench before starting.

    Zoukei Mura 1/32 J2M3 Raiden

This is an early ZM kit, their fifth release and was the first produced in a single colour plastic and one that showed a significant improvement in burr free moulding. An excellent kit that had only one real fit issue, the ribs in the wings around the machine guns. That was very strange to...

Zoukei Mura J2M2 Rai Den, 1/32 scale.

I will do a completed thread tomorrow. Just one final picture on here. Overall a really good kit. Just the few issues I mentioned.

The main undercarriage was tricky to put together but in the end, with a bit of patience it was fine. ZM do a lot of innovation and I am sure that producing separate frames for the windows onto which you glue the actual windows after the frames are painted sounded like a good idea. I...

I have done some fairly extensive chipping and paint west using Uschi Metal Powder, chrome effect. (Not sure why it’s called chrome, it isn’t, it’s just the best one for this purpose). AK kerosene leaks wash and AK Exhaust wash also applied.

After a matt coat I have started the weathering on the underside. Mostly using weathering pencils and some pigments so far.

The wash dried and after a couple of hours I used a piece of dry blue roll to wipe it off. I used a cotton bud in hard to reach areas. A couple of tips on this: 1/ Always end with a wipe in the direction of airflow. 2/ If you don’t like the effect then you can use a wet piece of blue roll...

I thought I would post a quick pic having applied a sludge wash. When it’s dried I will remove with a cloth dampened in water. Sludge washes are quicker and easier to apply over large surface areas specially if you have lots of rivets.

Decals all done and I have sprayed a sealing coat of gloss varnish. I have also been prepping the other bits ready for final fittings. So far I used an enamel pin wash to bring out detail on the internal parts, u/c legs etc. for the airframe I am going to use Flory clay washes, I have...
