The latest scratch build. A Well Bottomed Gig

I titled this thread Latest Scratch Build... So - Here's my latest scratch build! It's a 12th scale Milk Float from drawings in the Voisey Collection available from Hobby's.

    Ships in Bottles?

It's back to the 'Endurance' model. I've had a change of heart - but for a very good reason, in my opinion, of course ! I realised when I gave this thread a name that it was going to be touch & go whether or not this model was going to end up in a bottle - hence the question mark in the title...

    Ships in Bottles?

Thanks, Paul & Jim! Some additions to the mini barge. The sails etc. Off topic, I know, but it's my 'try out' model to confirm various techniques before going for it with the 'Endurance' model. Just for fun, I shall complete this model and stick it into a case as a diorama.:)

    Ships in Bottles?

Thanks Peter! It's now 4.15 and I'm finished with the shed for today. All of the lower shrouds are on. The sheer batons are from black cotton stiffened with CA. Incidentally, the thick Black continuous cordage from stern to bow is there as a temporary 'hand' to keep the masts in their...

    Ships in Bottles?

Yesterday I put a few notional deck houses and fittings in place. Today, Sunday morning in the shed with a reel of fly tie silk and and a bit of breath holding, I've braced the mizzen mast with it's lower shrouds. The engine room ventilators are 'large' insect mounting pins with the round heads...

    Ships in Bottles?

I needed to reduce the depth of the hull so that it will fit through the neck of the bottle! A 1/64" plywood deck layer was added after scribing some planking, tinted with soft pencil lead rubbed in. The bulwarks are from the same plywood CA'd edge on. Hull now painted Black acrylic and when dry...

    Ships in Bottles?

Yes, Pete. I do have a heater but with the winter fuel allowance now kaput it's set to low - so still a little chilly. Yesterday I blocked out the hull of the "Endurance" - henceforth referred to as the model! - and plotted the side and bottom shapes using thin card templates. Deck view...

    Ships in Bottles?

As a change from run of the mill models I thought to re-visit the craft of stuffing a bottle with a ship. The last time I did this must have been about seventy years ago, so I sent off for a couple of modern books on the subject only to find that nothing in the way of technique has changed! To...

The latest scratch build. A Well Bottomed Gig

Thanks for the kind words & welcome Mr Moderator! Here's an update and probably the last image of it 'cos it's finished and I've nothing more to say about it. Unless, of course, anyone here has a question! :) The tyres are on. 3/16" dia. rubber cord CA'd onto the rims. I think that I...

    The 'Catspaw' dinghy

For a really serious build, I can thoroughly recommend this kit from the Wooden Boat Store, U.S.. The box contains drawings, instructions and all of the materials needed to complete the 12th scale model. The entire construction follows full size practice of laying off from the lines drawings...

The latest scratch build. A Well Bottomed Gig

That's the trick, Neil. Never give up - and create a broad range of subjects to model. Otherwise boredom can creep in and you might be tempted to take up chicken farming. Anyway - here's the finished (?) model, the lining was done this morning. A bit rough but so what. Good enough for hand...

The latest scratch build. A Well Bottomed Gig

Thanks, Jim. The wheels invoked a great deal of head scratching but suddenly I had a 'Eureka' moment! I cut two sets of felloes for each wheel and glued them together brick wall style, flat on like this... ... and then carefully cut the spokes to fit snuggly onto the completed rim and glued...

The latest scratch build. A Well Bottomed Gig

Having been a model maker for a little over 85 years majoring on aircraft & boats, I felt it time to broaden my interests. (See my profile). Way back in the eighties I had built the Remploy kit of a Thames Sailing Barge model, the "Kathleen" , and based the model on a vessel I once part-owned...
