I'm sure it would, then again the ship had a refit schedule where it was re applied. also over the years the decoration was reduced as budgets was tighter. when it was re- named royal sovereign half of the decoration was removed.- Bri62

Paul gold is inert so won't be affected by salt water that's why gold bullion found in ship wrecks doesn't degrade also it was reapplied on a regular basis.- Bri62
