    Latest Acquisitions (2023)

Inspired by the flats at Figure World North 2023, I purchased this from El Greco Miniatures. I don't know what scale it is - the panel is c. 15cms x 11cms. Great sculpting, but the finish leaves a little to be desired, with one or two tiny bubbles, and some unfortunate miscasting right in the...

    Figure World North 2023

No gongs for my entries - no surprise, the standard was awesome. Here's my haul:

    Figure World North 2023

I've got to show you these 90mm(?) commedia dell'arte flat figures. Right up my street, and phenomenally well painted.

    Figure World North 2023

I'm already £50 poorer! I won't take a lot of pictures, but I can tell you the standard is sky-high. For example, the freehand on this, and the expressiveness of the face is fabulous - perfectly rendered, just like a Greek icon.

    Figure World North 2023

I've just arrived at Figure World North 2023, at the Galtres Centre, Easingwold. I've submitted four entries to the competition (something I said I'd never do!) and I've just had to come out for a coffee and a lie down - the quality of entries is awesome. At first glance the show looks...

Retirement has arrived with a bump

Thanks for the VERY kind words, folks! Sounds like we're all enjoying retirement in our own ways. I just spent a glorious day with one of my nephews and his girlfriend in Little Langdale - fell walking, wild swimming, and dinner in the back garden of a tiny cottage looking out at this view of...

Retirement has arrived with a bump

What's on the bench? Not a clue! I just can't bring myself to sit indoors in this blazing weather. We've also been sailing in the Golfe de Morbihan in southern Brittany - and I've retired! I hadn't been meaning to, but my employers acted like such monumental numbskulls that I really had no...

    First diorama - The Choice

There's been a great big pause on the construction of this. It started when I couldn't decide on the best order of assembly - every option compromised some element of the build, so I just stopped. And then couldn't start again. Finally I realised I just had to get stuck in and hope for the...

    First diorama - The Choice

Here's the tree, with foliage on (postiche and fine scatter). I've used subdued colours - no brilliant greens. I may have been too cautious in this.

    First diorama - The Choice

Here's the second coat once it's cured. You can see it has shrunk right back again. I'm not happy about how closely the main trunk is conforming to the cylinder of dowel beneath - so I've added some foam clay to buttress the roots and reduce the regular cylindricality (is that even a word?)...

    First diorama - The Choice

I've just added a second coat on the main trunk - you can see it's pretty gloopy, runny stuff. I'll take another pic once it's gone off, so you can see how it shrinks back. It has certainly given a lot more structure to the armature - much less flex. The pot is a bit of a bugger to open - the...

    First diorama - The Choice

After a first layer of Flexi-Bark™. This is messy stuff to apply, but it should get easier with subsequent layers. Still some wire showing, although fairly minimal due to the fine grade of wire I used. The finish is very bobbly but I can sand it down a bit once I have sufficient on.

    First diorama - The Choice

This landed on my mat while I was at work - I think it's the Flexi-bark™ at last!

Langy's 'The Mekon', 1/16 scale figure by Mooncrest models.

Spot on advice from @Tim Marlow, of course. One other thing to consider is that, where the crease points directly up to the light source then it's the very deepest part of the crease that reflects the light, like this:

    Latest Acquisitions (2023)

My first diorama build has stalled while I wait for some Flexi-Bark™ to turn up and, although I hate having more than one project on the go at any one time, I got fed up with waiting and bought these from El Greco Miniatures. Tisiphone is one of The Furies of Roman/Greek mythology - maiden...

    Airbrush spray booth

Benchvent 300SD recently purchased here, and I absolutely love it. Robustly built, quiet, effective at eliminating nasty smells and a sensible size (doesn't feel like you're spraying into a shoebox). Having said that, I do occasionally find myself forgetting to switch it on before I start...

    While away the time :-D

One way to avoid the spiral into obsessive perfectionism is to choose fantasy subjects - that way there is no 'right' or 'wrong', it's just a question of doing what you think is appropriate. Another release from endlessly fretting about skill and accuracy is to acknowledge that we're making...

    Advice on cat painting, please

I've stalled on wire tree making while I wait for some Flexi-Bark™ to arrive. So I've just had an absolute blast painting this. Took about four hours start to finish - no pressure, slap on the paint and have some fun!

    First diorama - The Choice

The Sculptamold is still not fully dry (our home is pretty cool), but the wire bending for the tree is complete. Next step is to soak it in dilute PVA to consolidate the individual paper-covered wires. I'll possibly add some IPA to the mix to help it penetrate.
