Remembering a quote from some British officer in the Waterloo campaign when told by a superior officer ".. they'll never hold...". His reply "you don't know Campbell". Forget which unit of "breechless bastards" it was. PaulE

At the Imjin an officer of the Gloucesters was asked for a sitrep by the supporting American unit.He apparently said "It's a bit sticky".

Didn't they lose about a third of their number in dead & missing/captured? Sticky indeed. A really fierce battle as I recall, with huge numbers of Chinese assaulting hastily prepared positions on separate hilltops. PaulE

Paul, they did indeed suffer heavily, as Americans didn't quite get the British 'understatement', asking them to hold out, which they did. By the time it was realized how bad things were, it was to late to relieve or withdraw them, though great efforts were made to do so.
