Applying varnish with a brush?

I've just started building again after a long break, tried a couple of cheap 99p ebay kits to make sure I can still wield a brush in anger and everything seems to be ok.

I'm now looking at trying weathering and marking panel lines etc, but need to apply a gloss coat in order to do this with a reasonable degree of success. Would I be able to apply gloss varnish such as xtracrylix with a brush? Can't stretch to an airbrush and compressor at the moment as I'm building a workshop, and don't mention rattle cans as I can't use these indoors.
