Hi,

I have just been given 2 aerographics balsa models which i have yet to start. Before i do so i would just like to ask what particular glue is best to use and how do i stop the model from distorting when constucting has i seem to remember this happening when i did one of these sort of models many years ago. Plus any other general tips would be appreciated regarding this sort of model.

Use a baseboard such as hardboard, selotape the plan to it and then lay the balsa parts on the plan. Pin the wood through the plan with large headed pins and use good old balsa cement. When the structure has set and everything done to it that requires to be done remove the pins, lift the frame with the plan which will be stuck with excess glue and carefully remove the plan from the frame. You can also put a layer of clingfilm over the plan before making the part to make removal a lot easier.

This should ensure a flat surface to your parts and prevent distortion. Make sure the atmosphere in your building area does not vary too much in humidity during the building process or this could cause distortion as well.

Good sensible advice , just some notes , pinning through the actual wood can split / weaken it , i use weights to hold it all down instead :xyxthumbs:- and an old alternative to clingfilm , which i find can a nusance - just rub candlewax onto the plans glue join areas . oh, i've found that cutting out stringer notches before doing former outlines helps too . Best of luck , and don't forget to post piccies ! - btw which kit is it ?
