ops, thought i had replied..

Thanks Guys!

Barry i use a minolta 5D DSLR with 50/300 Sigma Lens. (maunal only). I plan to get a lens doubler before the next show giving me an effective 600mm zoom.

Nice work, especially with a telephoto attached,no easy job following them around the sky,the Utterly Butterly Stearman picture is a winner.

Squiffy,

I have just bought a Canon 30D DSLR and I was wondering what additional lenses to get for it. I would have thought from what you have there that 300mm would be plenty. Surely a 600mm would take an incredibly steady hand to capture such subjects and you would loose so much light that you would only be able to use it on the sunniest of days?

Let me know what you think as I wil be having a look around when I go back to work. (The lenses are a hell of a lot cheaper in the US at the moment, as was the camera, with the exchange rate the way it is.)

Squiff a sigma lens ????? now when i was into pics they were considered utter crap???? but your pics are awsome !!! maybe i spent too much money when i didnt need to lol

Nigel- Sigma lens are crap, lol! They are not the worst but they are far from the likes of cannon. The lens i have is the higher ended version but its old, nakered and really not all that!

Richard- the 30D is an AMAZING camera, you lucky man! Very true a 600mm lens will make tracking much harder, but thats the sacrifice you pay for larger zoom! A lens doubler is a much better bet as you keep the stock 300mm lens (which is still ok) and then have the option to goto 600mm. Like you say though you do loose a couple of the F-stops so lighting becomes more of an issue. However it does allow you to get those shots the 300mm doesnt. A 1.5 doubler is recomended by most as you get the increased zoom with much less grain etc.

Ive no idea whats a "good" lens these days but there are plenty of good DSLR forums to go and browse, these should help a lot. Also buy in the US definatly, prices here are a joke!

Char- my camera is the entry level DSLR from minolta, the body can be had on ebay for about £250 now which is pretty cheap (although still a vast sum of money in my opinion!)

Barry- The utterly butterly girls are great, friendly and really know their stuff! Cant beat a nice stearman though!

Squiffy, some of those Stearmans are the very same machines that my Dad flew back in 1941 ! probably stock engines replaced with bigger lumps, then a spate of crop dusting, then after further overhaul placed on the Amerrican civil market, what amazing airframes they have proved to be.

I would give my eye(sp?) teeth for 10minutes in one of those beatuiful machines!

The overhaul must of been quite an undertaking in its self. They are in fab nick, anything that can be polish or cleaned is done so to the extreame!
