discussion Brushes for different paint.

I have been using different brushes for acrylic and enamel, is this necessary or do they just need a good clean between.  Also I've now started to use a brush for some oil work, it's great for faces and some other small work, do I need another set of brushes for those too?

I have different sets too. 


for acrylic paint


for enamel weathering - these I would use for oils as well.


finally a set for dry brushing (you can now get brushes designed for this)


I dont see any reason for oils and enamel paints to use seperate brushes.

As Barry. Although I use enamels only for effects.


If you want to be correct brushes are manufactured specifically for both enamels or oils and for acrylics. I follow the correctness but have to own up that there does not seem to me to be much difference.


I do know, purely as my back aches, that I have just finished decorating our two bedroom flat. For that I use brushes for emulsion and separately for oil based. Mainly as one being water the other oil and I would have to continually clean for each operation.


Matter of interest have a look at this little unit. I have 4 little bottles in the bottom  of the little bucket with cleaners for both acrylic and enamel plus water for each type. Works a  treat. Prevents the brush tips being bent. https://www.artsupplies.co.uk/search.php?search=art329

Phew, glad I don't have to splash out on more brushes, plus 3 different sets would be confusing.

Barry, what make of brushes do you prefer. Ive tried Italerie, Humbrol and one or two others but not at all happy with them.

Awins I don't know if this helps but have read that make up brushes are meant to be good. bought a cheap set of 15 on line all shapes and sizes

I've just bought some of the Tamiya High Grade (not the Pro) brushes and am very pleased with them for the price. I've only used them with acrylics.


With the ones Barry has linked to, I've heard good things about the Flex-I-File ones and I too have used the AK ones and they are great for weathering and 'general' work. I also use the micro brushes and they are incredibly useful when you've made a mistake detail painting and have to do a bit of clean in tight and/or awkward positions.
