Hi Guys,

I recently had purchased for me the Billing Boats HMS Victory set. Prior to this I have no wooden model making experience but have a reasonable amount of airfix kits under my belt - I'd like to think I've got a steady hand (and the patience to boot!). Very aware that you all probably think I'm mad starting off with a kit of this size/difficulty but hopefully i'll end up producing a kit to a respectable standard!

I've been using this forum as a reference, in an attempt to repay the internet stratosphere i'll post my build as often as I can; hopefully others will find some use in it!

So far I've just completed the decking on the lower decks - having never done any sort of decking before I'm really happy with the results. even though it won't be seen (much) I tried to do it as best i could so when im doing the decking on the upper decks i've got a bit of experience behind me. Let me know what you think! My main areas of concern are: the shade of the decking - i varied the shade of the deck to create a subtle uneven effect; is that accurate? also the thickness of the caulking - i used the rigging provided dyed and then i ran it through a blob of glue on my fingers.

For those wondering, I'm using the Admiral Paints HMS Victory set and this colour was acheived by watering down the 'walnut' colour. I then applied it very gradually with a sponge.

Hi mobear thanks for the comment! what do you think of the size of the caulking?

For anyone wondering, I painted the planking before i applied it to the ship. I wanted to keep the planking the same sort of colour with subtle variations in shade. The way i acheived this was by taping a few planks together whilst they lay flat on a table. I gradually stained each of them together and removed one strip at a time, whilst still staining the remaining strips with one or two more coats.

Obviously then I cut each of the long strips into planks and stuck them in place.

my main tip so far has been to apply less paint with more shades and gradually build it up. its fairly painstaking and boring but i definitely think its worth the extra time - to give you an idea i applied maybe 6/7 coats of very dilute paint before i was happy with the colour.

i've explained that in a fairly round-about way, if anyone wants me to go over it again i'm happy to post pictures of the process.

Hi Sam, First I must take my hat off to anyone who tackles the Victory kit. I did the Billings Cutty Sark and know how much work you have ahead of you. My best advise is to google hms victory photos and check each colour before you decide. Here is a photo of the actual deck.

I made the Cutty Sark about 25 yeras ago, and followed the instructions provided. A number of years later I had the chance to visit it before the big fire, and found that the deck instead of mahogany colour as the instructions, it was actually bleached white with the crews continual scrubbing, the sun and salt water. My best advise is to check photos before you commit.

Looks as if you have the size of the planking and caulking spot on. Good Luck Derek

Nice work Sam.... love the Caulking and the bleached finish on the decking! Looks just like the real thing to me.

Painstaking isnt the word is it.

I have just ordered some new glue and a kicker to get the stuff to adhear quicker to the planking... I will let you know how I get on.

Whenever I've done model making before I've only ever used the guide as a reference. Using photos for reference is something unexpected and quite cool. Paul what is a kicker? Derek the more I look at the project the more I realise the task ahead - i love getting my teeth stuck into a project so this should keep me satisfied for a while!

I did a dry run positioning the Upper deck tonight and it seems that my frame isnt quite square, annoyingly. Its hard to see, but the right 'lip' below the upper deck protrudes slightly whereas the left hand side doesnt at all. View attachment 65257

again you can see here how where the bottom elastic band runs across the board, the left hand protrusion is much lower than the right hand one. Hopefully this won't be a huge issue but, as a bit of a perfectionist, its annoying to think my framing isnt quite straight.

I suspect to blame is the time of stand im using - a sort of DIY/bodge job. View attachment 65259View attachment 65260 its hard to tell but the frame sort of slots in.I imagine as time goes by i'll have to adjust it to accomodate the changing shape of the boat.

Still on with the planking on mine. When you come to the planking have a read through this, I am getting the feeling I have done mine wrong after reading this.
