Howdy Guys and Gals,

Well, I bought a 1/72nd canberra/B57 model from the hobby shop today. However, the reason I bought the model was it was on sale for $10 whereas the other model of the same plane by anopther manufacturer was $57.

The one I bought was manufactured in the "old soviet union"...You know, the U.S.S.R. when all of those countries were one country.

Anyway, the model looks great other than being molded in a bright yellow plastic lol. I was just curious as to whether anyone here has ever seen box art work like this, or a similar "lay out". The box is really peculiar in its construction, the end flaps open, then the box kind of "unfolds".

Anyway, if you have seen anything similar to this, I would just like to know a little about it. Being from te old soviet union, I kinda hate to build it, I am sure the company no longer exsist.

I have included a photo of the box and a close up of the print in the upper left of the box. (note the company logo in the close up).

Greg,this is one of many mouldings of the old Frog/Novo Camberra B (1)8 night interdictor aircraft,the company could be connected or even be KP but I cannot read Russian,the tools have been doing the rounds ever since they went to Russia on the tools for loose mouldings scheme,Russia pressed the kit five times over to what Frog ever did ! they even appeared in red as well,a case of getting what plastic that you can.

The economy boxes were awful,to think people queued to get these kits like bananas in wartime.

Keep that one intact and build a more common pressing,that is my advice.

I looks like "Sbornaya Model Samoleta". Sbornaya is a town in the Ukraine. "Samolet" is the Russian for aircraft. "Model" is...well you can probably get that bit.

Quite a few of the Russian kit manufacturers are consortiums,one does the moulding or prototypes,another the decals,another one producing the box art and instructions,they operate from tiny premises in house and selling direct to places such as Hannants.

It works well as it keeps overheads down,that box reminds me of a simple silk screen printed affair,probably is ? have got a few similar ones myself in the kits to build stash.

This should be fairly rare as most of the frog/novo moulds were destroyed in a train crash the logo looks like the old veb plastkart one ???????

Howdy Guys,

Thanks for all the input, I am adding pics of "the box (open), the instr., decals and the model in the bag" in one pic. Another photo of the writing on one of the box flaps and one last photo of the company logo and a little writing found on the instructions.

This model was destined to go with the Handley Page Victor I am building but, being that I know it is an older model and from a country that no longer exsists, I may take Barrys advice and just hang on to it. Who knows maybe someday it will be worth more than the $10 I paid for it or the Original $15 that was asked for it.......but it sure would look good refueling behind that victor lol.

Anyway, Phoenix, If your mother has nothing better to do, she is more than welcome to help out, but dont have her go out of her way to do it, I was really just curious since we dont get many Soviet models here in Arkansas. Its just kinda neat to see things from other countries and in this case to see something I enjoy from another country...a country that no longer exsists as it did when this model was created.

Greg,you will get your Canberra without robbing this kit,there are still plenty of kits around for this one,if I see one then I will pick it up for you,most people buy them to convert to the B.2 or PR.7 versions as add on resin sets are available.

I keep looking at that yellow colour,it is actually authentic because the A & AEE operated a Canberra in all yellow,there is a German example in overall orange as well.

I notice that the decal sheet serials are yellow,they are usually white,this really is an oddball kit,I think that Nigel is right in saying that it could be VEB,otherwise known as Plastikart,how they come by these moulds is anyones business ? but kit manufacturers do hire moulds out when they are finished with them to obscure manufacturers.

Is there any date anywhere ? look in the corners of the instruction sheet,back of the decal etc.

Incidently I have just found some similar bland boxes in my stash which includes a few Russian kits.

Howdy Barry, et al,

Ok, I knew there must be a date on this kit too, somewhere. The only place I could think of their being one was under a sticker on the opposite flap than what I had in the pic. It was one of those "wet and stick" type stickers and being that this is an older kit, it wasnt to hard to remove.

Anyway, to make a short story much longer than it should be lol, the kit was made in aug. 1980. I still havent determined the kit manufacturer for certain unless what ya'll have said is correct, so as of right now thats all I have to go on.

And Barry, dont worry about picking me up one, I think I am going to go ahead and build this one and I can talk to the hobby shop guy and see if he can get more.

I know he has some really oddball models there anyway, this was just the first one I had seen like this.

Of course this means I have to really get moving on the Victor now too lol, It is setting painted in its box right now, unassembled.

I have also bought two spitfires, one a MkII and the other an Mk VIIIc as well as a seafury and a hurricane. The seafury and hurricane are hobbycraft "elite" models, the other spit is a revell. I have also purchased a Multiple Rocket Launch System (MRLS) in 1:35 as well as a Paladin Howitzer.

The minicraft Ventura is coming along pretty well too although its not finished either....I seem to have fallen behind and now have a huge backlog of models to build lol.

So it is much later than I thought but must still be old stock.

Actually glad that you are going to build her,here is a suggestion in view of the unusual kit colour then why not build the kit,then give her a coat of Johnsons/Future all over,this will make the yellow plastic look like paint and preserve an original part of the kit,and as I mentioned there was a yellow Canberra so it would be authentic,just an idea for you to mull over.

You will love the Victor kit,very impressive looking model when completed,mine is in that desert pink scheme.

Veb went out of buisiness in 1989 if i remember correctly they had rented a lot of the frog / novo moulds and did in fact produce some excellent vacforms of russian seaplanes

As for a canberra look at matchbox and airfix for a couple that may fit the bill (the matchbox kit i think has the markings for the boscombe down one)
