discussion Colourful ships

I was very impressed by the colour schemes on a couple of ships I saw on the Bodensee plying between Southern Germany and Switzerland. One was a real "Booze Cruise" vessel with advertising over the entire length. Another (the blue one ) was advertising ice cream I think. What do you think ? Makes a change. Also pictured is a very slinky "retro" styled catamaran which would be a different shape on you local lake. By the way, the large white building behind the red boat is the Zeppelin Museum....I want their Transit van !

Maybe some of the models of the future.

The painting would be a challenge for an airbrush fanatic.

Duncan I agree with you,during the past few years there has been a marked change in transportation colourschemes whether it be land,sea or air,gone are the dowdy bland standard what I term 'designers or draughtsmans' colours,now airliners have www addresses emblezoned from nose to tail with bright sometimes garish colours,it all started with de-regulation in the U.S.A when the carriers wanted their machines to really stand out.

Many of the colours would need careful planning for model use,but it sure is a refreshing change from black and white.

Perhaps an opportunity for decal/transfer producers to invade the model ship market. A few "standard" P&O, Townsend,Cunard, Brittany etc sheets in the usual scales to get the ball rolling. Until recently it was difficult to get even Royal Navy pennant numbers, probably more RN ships modelled than any other type of vessel, tugs next ? Look at the railway transfers available, even grafitti in N guage. Self adhesive (car sign makers) would be better I suppose for model ships. Any more colourfull ship liveries ? By the way , what about the Zepp Transit ?

to be fair there are allready some specialist transfer makers out there, its just a question of searching them out, on a marine modelling front there are people like BECC, who make transfers/ decals/ vinyl self adhesive items and ships flags, if you want something a little more bespoke then look in the yellow pages or similar, i have found several companies within a 15 mile radius of my home where you take in artwork, or an image or a template and they will make full colour stickers or rub downs from your supplied images/ artwork, i once made a giant display model of a camel trophy landrover in 1 to 6th scale, and needed all the rub downs to be produced for it, the full colour A4 sheet of rubdowns were custom produced for me at me desired scale from the artwork i gave them, it took about 36 hrs for them to do and it cost me about £12 for the sheet, ( this was about 5 yrs ago however)

so if you have built a blinder of a model, dont spoil it for inadequate or poor decals, shop around, do a bit of searching and get what you need produced..... if you have spent all that time on the model why not do it justice with some pukka decals !

Don't forget nowadays that with a bubble-jet printer, a sheet of A4 decal paper, a photo manipulating software package and a bit of know how you can make your own quite effectively.

If you haven't got the necessary almost certainly someone at your club will have.
