As you build your group project why not add any info or photographs here ? that way it will be easy to follow everyones progress, also any questions can be answered or any building techniques discussed as we go along, everyone can learn from the experience.

Sounds like the perfect plan to me, ive already sourced some good 1:48th pilots and ground crew, i will post details tonight when i have time!

Dieppe Spitfires & a Griffon engined flypast.

Dieppe Spitfires

Here is a rare picture of the white cowl striped Spitfires used in the Dieppe raid, this would make a very unusual colourscheme for this aircraft.

On 19 August, 6,000 Canadian troops were put ashore at Dieppe for a large-scale raid. Code-named Operation Jubilee, the raid was a costly failure but provided invaluable lessons for subsequent seaborne invasions. Of the 67 RAF squadrons committed in support, 48 were of Spitfires - 42 with Mk Vs, four with Mk IXs and two with Mk VIs. Of the 106 Allied aircraft lost, 88 were fighters, most of them Spitfires.

And a lovely flypast of Spitfires at the Duxford air show, can you hear those Griffon engines roar ( from Avro Shackletons ) ? PRU Blue scheme would make a simple but effective scheme.

when i was in air cadets we were on our anual wing parade.

Carva Baracks (Saffron Waldon) boiling hot, military blues in our final formation for the day and a spit and a mustang from duxford did a fly by for us, well i say it was a fly by, they nearly clean took our heads off, no exaguration they were at most 30ft above us, it was amazing. truly fantastic (and truly deffening!!!!)

the next year the decided to suprise us.everyone was in the double-decker buses eating packed lunches when a lancaster flew (again no exageration) about 20ft above the buses. I was on the top deck and i was (as well as deffened) startled the hell out of, the bus felt like it nearly tipped over.

sorry for that, barry just mentioning the words fly-by triggered those memories...

anyway, just orderd the Tamiya 61032 Spitfire Mk.1 (stick with the original me thinks) 1/48 (£13.99)

so when is the official start date of the 3 months?

You can start right now Richard or as soon as you get your kit,all I have done on mine is to open the box and take a look, remember folks this is not a competition,it is simply a group build whereby we can learn about modelling as we go along, the idea is to just enjoy a leisurely build and at the end see how everyone has got on,there are no tiresome rules just build a 1=48th scale Spitfire at your pace, you decide how far that you want to go with any detail or paint finish, you have plenty of time so enjoy the build.

It would be nice if we can encourage people to place some pictures of their models here as you go along, that way we can see how everyone is progressing.

Unfortunately, as I am now back at work for three months, and the agreed time frame is three months, I am not going to be able to enter the build and it is not possible to do one at work. Does anyone want a Tamiya 1/48th Spit?

*** Sorry Richard, these comments were intended for the other Richard ! too many Richards who are modellers,I understand your dilemma.

richard, how much do you want for it? i know iv just ordered one but you cant have too many.

that is of course only if everyone on the group build has got one already. i wouldnt want to get it off you only to find out some one who was in the build couldnt do it because they didnt have a model!

...if that makes sense

IF YOU WANT TO MAKE IT EASIER....WHEN YOU ARE TALKING TO ME PUT 'RICHARD.W'

Hey Bunk, keep hold of the spit. I would imagine the build thread will be up for some considerable time. When you get back, build yours after seeing our efforts. You will at least be able to see any pitfalls or read of any possible highs or lows during our builds.

Of course some people may see that as an unfair advantage!!

I might just do it though as I haven’t made a Spit for thirty years and I do like the look of them.

In fact when I last made one 1/48th scale wasn’t around it was either the 1/72nd Airfix Johnny Johnson one or the 1/24th kit.

Im just glad it wasnt a fgure group build lol so which spit ?????

Free Spitfire download-Go get it now.

http://www.theheavenlyhangar.com/proto_promo/index.htm

To commemorate the anniversary of the Spitfire prototype K5404 ,Aeroplane Heaven have prepared a free download, only thing is you will have to be quick as it is only online for 24 hours, this one really is a beauty and I have been flying her all afternoon,so in between building your model you can fly this one,it is suitable for both FS2002 & FS2004,the cockpit is the best one that I have seen and the roar of the Merlin is superb, download the file and will autoload when opened.

*** Excellent research Squiffy, the last link gives excellent reference for the Vowkes filters used on tropical Spits,in-line engines suffered badly in such dusty conditions and radial engined aircraft faired much better in the desert.

Those etched parts look fiddly,if you cannot afford such luxuries then ordinary tin foil such as pizza bases is excellent for making seats and fittings, just use a pair of nail scissors to cut to shape, stick with cyno, rivets can be simulated by pressing a pin indent into the foil.

well guys my modle arived today, supermarine spitfire mk.1 got my enzo to do first and im resisting the urge to multi-task as my desk is not big enough :(

my parents got me a new desk last week from ikea, more like a kitchen worktop so it can withstand the cutting :S but they forgot the legs, so at the moment i am very limited on space :(
