discussion Hairspray Technique For Aircraft?

Hi all,


Does anyone know of a tutorial or YouTube vid showing the use of the hairspray technique on a plane? Everything I see seems to be for armour.

Exactly the same in principle. Does require practice to get it right, what doesn't? Are you looking a chipping or derelict? Aircraft tend not to get as abused looking as armour, certainly not in service anyway.

Well I was thinking that the method might differ a little on aircraft Graham. I've done it on 1/35 armour, but a 1/72 plane (Bf 110) seems a tad daunting! View attachment 243015



I want it to be a lightly worn winter camo, as you say, less abused than armour would be.

Do you airbrush or hairybrush? With an airbrush I would freehand it using very, very thin paint in dusting sprays and gradually build it up. Hairybrush, I would have no idea as I am rubbish with them but it may work the same.


When I say very, very thin paint, I really mean tinted thinners that you may not even notice until the third or fourth coat. By covering a defined area with the first few coats and then not going to the edge with the next few and reducing the area in the next few, you should get a feathered soft edge so long as you keep it random.

Oh I'm airbrush all the way Graham! Me & hairy sticks don't get along


I like your ideas so that's what I'm going to do. I think I'll try it out on a paint mule first & see how I do... fingers crossed
