Sounds like a great idea, but I am afraid I am not skilled enough to create a good looking dio yet. One day maybe. :)
We all start somewhere , I've only been doing dios for a few months :)

For a landing dio all you need is a piece of lawn ( you can get this from any hobby shop ) and a piece of fine sand paper like wet and dry ( you can get this from b&q , cut two pieces of the lawn and put on a board any boars will do even cardboard , cut a piece of the sand paper and stick that down with PVA then put the pieces of lawn either side of the sand paper

To make the plane look like it's in the air just get some thin clear straws and glue one under each wing and one under the tail put that on the runway and hey presto you've made a dio of a plain coming into land :)

I would go for a 1/72 scale.

Why because they are completed in a short time realtive to a larger scale model.. Secondly you are learning about how to go about constructing a model aircraft & all the techniques that go with it. If like me you will make mistakes. In my opinion it is better to make mistakes on a simple model which is soon finished & you have a quick rudimentary idea of what is needed.

Then have a go at a 1/48 as you will have less chance of making a cock-up.
