Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good spray mask to use for airbrushing (mainly acrylic paint).

Thinking it needs to be a respirator type.

Hi David, The link below is the Mask I use when airbrushing Tamiya and Gunze Acrylics. Lately I have been using a lot of Lifecolor (same company as the mask) which is non toxic and does not smell, so when I use Lifecolor I don't use a mask. Cheers Derek

There are many out there David so it is pick one.

But I went for one that you are able to replace the filters. Plus & the most important a manufacturer that supplies a variety of filters for different environments.

The filters are graded so pick a set which suits your use of chemicals. Seems to me a waste of time & money wearing a filter which does not, or half does, the job

Like Derek I tend now not to wear a mask as Vallejo is non toxic although they, Vallejo, do say in a half hearted way it is a good idea. I do ventilate & use a mask when using cleaning stuff for airbrush cleaning as I am not sure of the toxic effect of the chemicals in the cleaner. Also with Vallejo varnish this I am reasonably certain does not do the lungs any favours & wear a mask when using.

My sessions are usually very short but I have noticed that a fug does build if it lasts a time & then I snap on the mask.

I go on a very rough & ready rule if it smells protect. But then I am not a scientist !

Hi David,

I always wear a mask for airbrushing even though I sit in front of an extract too. There are loads on the market but as Laurie says, make sure you get one that is suitable for the task in hand. You'll need one that catches paint particulates and also solvent vapour. I'm a little concerned about inhaling acylic paint particulates as i'm not sure how your lungs would absorb or deal with it.

It is disposable but lasts for months or longer depending on the usage it gets, olus if you keep it in it's protective bag between use then it lasts a lot longer. It's very comfortable and does not obstruct view. By the time you buy disposable screw on filters you probably spend the same as this mask complete. I use this same type of mask at work when stripping down carbon brushes on industrial motors.
