Days before the inception of the SARD. (SAR Diver). Both the back seat crew in the Whirlwind are in Mk1 or it maybe Mk3 flying suits. If one had been a SARD he would have been in a wet suit!!
It was a Scimitar that brought about the airborne divers after the ship having to watch a pilot unable to escape - drown. With the diver, they were able to dive under the surface, operate the external ejection handle or jettison the canopy and assist the pilot vacate the sinking aircraft either by operating the quick release harness or simply cutting the straps of his harness.
