discussion How Many Coats Of Johnsons Klear?

Evening All,

First thread - so be gentle with me!!

I've just got back into model kits after a break of about 8 years (oldest child is about 8 years old - there's a connection!), and I am currently completing a Hawk T1A and a Phantom F4. I've been surfing the net for a few days on and off finding out about new products that weren't around before. Hence I came across Johnsons Klear being mentioned left, right and centre - it sounded useful - so I went out and bought some. So I've started to experiment with the stuff - currently trying it out on a BL755 Cluster bomb (not brave enough to try it on anything bigger yet)!! My query is how many coats of this liquid should I expect to apply to a satin base coat to provide a gloss surface suitable for decals to be applied? I am applying by brush (don't know enough about air brushes yet!!).

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

one should be enough- decals- then another to seal....

I've not logged in for a couple of days and have only just seen your reply. I've actually applied 4 coats of the stuff up to now, although I haven't really seen any difference since the first coat!

Anyway, decals next, then the sealing coat. Can I apply humbrol 49 for a Matt finish over the Klear/decals or will there be some sort of chemical reaction?

acrylic coats- no problem-just leave at least 24 hrs ,as, depending on how thick a coat - caution pays off- dunno about the enamels , as I don 't use them much,,,,

Acrylic over acrylic or enamel is ok. Enamel over acrylic, be very careful. Definitely do a test before you hit your model! I've discovered some unfortunate reactions the hard way.

Hello again Bluebottle/Stona,

I did a quick test on the BL755 yesterday afternoon and overcoated the Klear with Humbrol 49 Matt - and all appears to have gone well. The Matt coat dried quickly with no cracking or reaction of any sort - a brief glance on the workbench this morning and everything still seems to be OK.

I am aware of the problems enamel/acrylic problems, but I'm wondering if the matt varnish is literally a varnish (not enamel based - although probably oil based of some sort)? Anyway all seems OK up to now - if anything goes wrong I'll repost and let you know.
