Horrendous! But if everyone survived because they were sky divers, what happened to the pilots? Were they also skydiving?

One pilot landed the damaged aircraft safely (probably shrugging it off as 'just a scratch' as you know how pilots are), and I think the other one bailed out with the rest of the skydivers, but my memory is sketchy ...

That's right. I think most of them got away with it because many of them were already effectively outside the aeroplane. They didn't get trapped inside.

Lucky indeed, very frightening situation even if you're used to the job as a pilot or are a adrenaline junkie, death will and does stalk everybody, this time they avoided the scythe by a hair-breadths.
