Hello

Does anyone have any experience of airbrushing with Hunbrol Clear Varnish please? I've used it for dunking clear parts and it's as good as Klear, in my view. If you have sprayed with Humbrol clear varnish, would you please post any hints nad tips, such as pressures, can it be thinned, if so, what ratios etc

Hahahaha I missed read part of your post there Aidan I misread the dunking as drinking and instantly thought bloody hell what do you want to drink it with clear parts for.

iv tried it and it bloomed on me ie left a white effect a friend who swears by it uses it all the time but he uses a hair drier after to dry it quickly . I went back to Vallejo

Hi Aidan. Just Clear-ed my Merlin Helicopter which is about 400mm long and a chunky item.

Went perfectly. Went once around it all then immediately gave another coat with out any problems. Dry to touch after a couple of hours. After 24 hours ready for decals weathering etc. Applied Clear with an airbrush with a .35 needle/nozzle.

I read else where about this white effect that you encountered Steve. It was thought that it was something left in the airbrush perhaps cleaner or a hint of paint form the airbrushes last outing. The person cleaned his airbrush and all went well. Another used a paint brush and had similar problems. Washed the paint brush thoroughly and all went well. Seems from this that other thinners cleaners bits of left over paint can cause a problem.

To ensure I blew out my airbrush perfectly dry before loading the cup. Just had another look and the Merlin is sparkling. In fact the best gloss finish I have had.

Just add Aidan that you do not need to thin as it is already as thin as you can get.

Pressure about 15psi with the .35nnedle/nozzle.

Brilliant stuff. Basically the only good thing Humbrol produces apart from their RLM enamel range. 20psi to 15psi works with my iwata neo as well.

I use it all the time, brilliant stuff, aibrushes beautifully without thinning. It is correct what others have said, make sure the airbrush is clean, make sure the surface of the model is also clean and dry as well.

I do get a white bloom - when decalling over it caused mostly by the use of Microsol, but it is not a problem as the bloom disappears when you airbrush the sealing gloss coat over it.

Thanks Laurie - stupid question I know buthow may coats do you think for a glass prior to decals? And how far away from the work would you spray?

On the number of coats Aidan. I have not applied more than two. Present model two coats and I have the best I have had for decals. Could not think you would want more. Humbrol say just keep applying and the coats become more shiny.

A lot will depend on your top paint coats. If these are nice and smooth that makes a good finish for the Clear.

For general coating work i keep 150mmm 6" away. But where it becomes tricky and you cannot get cover as the brush is to far away I get in close but lessen the amount of Clear going through the brush.

I second the two coats Laurie said, I have never used more than that. Sometimes I have only used 1 coat with success.
