I'm afraid I can only offer suggestions as I have no idea but I suspect that someone here will know. I can't see any reason for it being a light and I can't see why a fire extinguisher would be on the outside of the hull. Inside yes but if you have to get out to put a fire out you may as well start running anyway!!

My money would be on some sort of radio distress beacon such as you find in ships lifeboats or some form of signal generator to feedback location. Maybe!!

Any other ideas?

I had a hunt through the pictures I took at Bovington -No signs of anything similar on their centurion. It's funny because I picked up a copy of Tamiya Model Museum and there was something very similar pictured attached to the rear of a 1:35 M10. IIt could well be a fire extinguisher. I'm sure it'd be a lot of use if there was a small fire on the outside of the vehicle which needed extinguishing.

I am no expert but it looks like an EPIRB(Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacons) but I would have thought it would be on top of the turret is it possable its a Yellow rotating becon

Whatever it is, it looks like it's a mounted to a QD bracket. I've seen similar brackets used to hold fire extinguishers in some WWII aircraft...just my tuppence worth.

...another thought

Robert, you could always try asking someone here:

http://www.rtr.org.uk/

I'm sure there's plenty of ex-Centurion guys who visit this site and use the guest book / contact pages.
