James normally I would paint it just before I start weathering
Unless I couldn't get to it once everything was assembled
Then I'd add rust coloured pigments as part of the weathering process

On German tanks very few parts would be rusty. Their maintenance of their vehicles was probably second to none.

Only the exhaust muffler would show any obvious signs of rust, other than perhaps a very small amount in the tow cables & pioneer tools.

I'd leave the exhaust until near the end. Here on my Ostwind I painted it Dunkelgelb first & then added the rust effect with pigments. Once the tank was painted, I attached it.

very nice work will make up pigment work or not or just plain chalk like browns and other colours colin

Jim a lot of my weathering is done with pastels or even simpler the sludge in the bottom of my brush cleaning bottle.
