Tonight I ventured fourth in the the man cave to do some work on the dio I am working on. Having purchased a couple of different sorts of waer effects I thought I would try out the E-Z water method. Read the instructons set up and read the instructions again. thought this would be a pretty painless operation Heat granules till melted pour liquid where required How hard can it be? On the instructions it says if the liquid gets to hot it can spatter so I try to take every precaution I can stirring throughout etc ec etc.


Liquid gains heat a lot faster than anticipated and sure enough starts to spatter all over the cooker the floor and ME.


Now I said I thought I had all the bases covered well that isn't strictly true as one area that wasn't was the hand holding the bloody pliers that were connected to the tin I was using to heat the not so E-Z water.


Net result a rather big mess to clean UP in the kitchen and a trip to the local A&E.


To say I felt a right plonker walking in and explaining I was playing with heated resin and it got a way from me would be an understatement. Although the nurse did say it made a change to the normal Friday night traffic (by that I could only assume she meant the drunks). End result of the evenings antics a small burn to ones hand. Guess he next time I use the stuff I will be covering up.

It hurts don't it? I have used the more solid liquid water effects, same principle except not pellets this is a lump of bouncy, springy jelly, you take a chunk off and same thing as you did, heat it up, too much it spits and burns...

Ouch hope you heal soon.thanks for the warning though as I have some of this waiting to be used and your warning as been noted goggles n gloves for me I feel one can never have enough PPE cheers John

I personally use a a javis pre mixed cold product called realistic water, it's half the price of scenic water and looks good when dry.

Now that must have hurt, Terry. No lasting damage and I'm glad to read you're o.k......


This is one of many reasons why I steer well clear of resin for water effects.


I've always used ordinary gloss varnish. The only physical damage that might occur is a sprained wrist opening the tin!


To each is own though, eh?

Ron I take it the varnish doesn't affect the plastic at all? I don't want to be pouring anything in that willmelt the figures etc.

Rob it is only a small spot about the size of a five pence piece with a line about an inch long coming away from it.

lucky then, I did the same when did the wax on my heinkel, but luck even though it was hot didn't burn the skin thank god!!!!!

I would have just left it but it is quite a deep burn so had no choice but to get it looked at.


The water will be solved very shortly as I want to get it finished so I can move on to the next bit.

No, it's fine. The only drawback is the fact that it can't be put on too thickly - 4 coats is enough to get the right watery look. Pouring is a no,no. To get the perceived depth, you need to paint the river bed various colours before the varnish is added. But the river bed / base is virtually on the surface to start with....


I hope you understand that nonsense, as it's hard to explain with the written word. Have a blimp at the construction of the mill dio. I explain the method more clearly there.


I think with your build being so far advanced, using varnish might not be suitable.....Scott's method produces great results and is safe.

Deluxe Materials make a product called Scenic Water which is much safer. The instructions say you only need to stand it in a bowl of hot water until it melts, however:


You'll need to stand it in a dish of water, then put the dish in a saucepan of water (as if you're going to steam it) and let the water in the saucepan boil for about 15 minutes!


OK, it's boiling water - but that's nowhere near as hot as liquid resin and you don't need any special PPE.


Unless of course you're the kind of guy that uses PPE when using a kettle to make a cup of tea!

I do hope that the hand is ok and not too damaged, did not mean to sound insensitive earlier, but iam the worlds worst for spilling things on myself that why I use the cold pre mixed stuff.
