I have sat here this afternoon after a good five hours in my model area, happily building and painting the beginning stages of the Panzer II kampfwagen, and thought how much happier i have been today building armour.

Its strange that i should feel that way, but for some reason its the way it is. Ive tried aircraft, and i dont get the same feeling when it comes to the main build, i dont enjoy the painting stages.

The same has happened with the blackhawk. I enjoyed building the cockpits of the aircraft ive done, but once it then gets to the main fuselage, i just loose my desire.

So i wondered how many of you have a particular genre you enjoy more than the rest, or more than one type?

So the poll above means you can choose multiple.

PLEASE CHOOSE ONE OR MORE OF THE GENRES THAT YOU ENJOY BUILDING TO COMPLETION. PLEASE dont choose models you HAVE built, or will build, only the genres that you truly enjoy building.

Thanks

I have chosen civilian vehicles and ships, don't ask which of those is my favourite as I couldn't answer (although till I got back into plastic kits I exclusively built scratch built ships (hence my avatar my favourite scratch build) however since I got back into plastic, I've not done or finished a single scratch build ship) I love the relative quickness of plastic kits (average scratch build 18 months, longest kit build, nearly 4 months) tbh all my scratch builds will probably stay on the shelf of doom forever. This will be an interesting poll, my bet is planes will be top closely followed by armour then ships then cars, haven't a clue after that

Armour is my 1st love, no question. But planes are enjoyable to build too.

I've chosen ships old galleons and ships of the line is my faveroite I love doing the rigging more than anything else along with scratch building which covers all genres

i know what you mean about aircraft

i enjoy doing them.....just not as much as armour..........and i dont enjoy that as much as doing bikes

i really like braille scale armour, dont know why, nostalgia maybe? what i did as a kid......i like 1/35 armour..........currently doing a 1/48 project and not liking it much....isnt that weird

Maybe I'm rare,but I have ticked everything.

Every model I start I finish that is why I only do one at a time.

I have the same passion whatever the model and will put my best effort into every model.

To be honest when I complete a model I will look at it for a day or so to see what I could have done better.

Once that stage is over it is onto the next and I lose all interest of the model I have completed last.

If I had to pick one over all the rest it would be figures/busts.

Ralph.

I'm rare ish then, I ticked most of them. ............both military, civilian vehicles, ships (and boats, I like the coastal forces stuff) and figures. And who doesn't like busts. ............oh, that's a different type of forum. If you model busts, does that always mean that each time you model you make a boob? Also if you build a bust out of box would that too be a boob too (or two)............excuse me, I'm having a sense of humour day today, it happens occasionally, only occasionally thankfully!:eek: :)

Military aircraft for me.... Most specifically 1/32 WW2.

That said I do venture into small scale and other eras such as my current 1/48 Phantom F4

I have even gone over to the dark side now and then and built armour but have not completed an armour build since the early 1980s

Good thread Dave, well thought out. Might have to include this bit in my book 'modelling madness, mayhem and mockery for mainly mad modellers, the philosophy, psychology and physicality behind the paint and plastic'!

I will of course include you in the acknowledgements page! ;)

Military aircraft, almost always WW2. Usually large scale, 1/32, but by no means always. I rarely build any other genre except for figures/vehicles which might form part of a temporary little vignette in support of the principal aircraft model.

Cheers

I enjoy building and painting figures, I tried a couple figures and somehow got hooked on this dark art!!

I also have found that I enjoy building and painting armour which for me has brought in some new challenges

Military armour and soft skins are my choice, I have built many military aircraft over the years, but prefer armour than any other subject.

My order of preference is:

1. Armor, WWII

2. Softskin, WWII

3. Aircraft, WWII

I discovered armor in the mid-'70s thanks to a friend, and have been hooked ever since (except for a few extended hiatuses.) Back then I would occasionally dabble in aircraft and to a lesser degree, ships, but almost always WWII subjects. But, armor has always been my top pick.

Since my recent return to the hobby, I have rediscovered a fondness for aircraft, thanks solely to the better quality, fit and finish of modern kits. There was nothing more frustrating than a lousy aircraft kit, and it seemed that all I could find were dogs.

As far as scale goes, 1/35 is my only scale preference (with an exception to that coming soon,) and aircraft has been 1/48. I just started my first 1/32 aircraft in almost thirty years, and am really enjoying it. In fact, I predict that 1/32 scale will become my scale of choice with aircraft from here on out.

I build predominantly military aircraft, any period; that's what I'm comfortable with and enjoy. But I do sporadically build a military vehicle or scifi piece, and enjoy those too as a break from the norm. Sci-if and what-ifs are a welcome change from research and accuracy concerns.

As a kid it was always aircraft.

On seeing a finished Italeri S-100 I bought that as my first kit on returning to the hobby.

Thoroughly enjoyed that and bought a couple of large scale submarine kits, but recently have acquired several large scale aircraft kits.

My problem is having the time to work on them.

Gregg

I don't have a favourite as such, so I've ticked the lot....I hope this doesn't sound blasé, but I'll have a go at anything, any scale. Sometimes it goes tit's up and ends up as a wreck on a dio. - or in the bin! I just enjoy model making. The kit can be a rough as old boots or fall together, it's all part of the fun.

Variety is the spice of life and all that........

Ron

I went for sci-fi and aircraft.

Although to be honest the sci-fi is mainly figures and the military aircraft by preference is WWII, I like the look of modern fast jets but I don't like building them.

I do venture into other areas as a child I used to build ships, but my interests have changed a bit over the years.

Armour for me. I appear to get away with a few mistakes which can be corrected easier than aircraft.

I like all types of modelling but I'll be honest I'm not as good as I want to be.

First has to be WW2 Aircraft and then possibly armour of the same era but I'm still learning this one even though I've built and thrown out more tanks etc but now I'm slowly learning new skills ( from here if the truth be known ( Peter Patrick, Phil , Laurie, Ken, Jim etc you know who you are and I'm slowly getting into figures thanks to Alan

I even have looked into sci if but my skills are not up to this yet. ( sorry Si

Scratch building is a new part to me and I'm really starting to get to grips with this and still although slow progress I'm getting there ( study ref pics etc and try to reproduce to scale

I will admit I do have to say Ww2 aircraft and post war really get my juices flowing

A piston engine or radial has character and scope to detail

( hope I can produce all that I say heh)

Thanks to this forum I've got more into this hobby and more out of it ( and a lighter wallet)

Must not buy more kits!!!
