My worst dio...

Here are some pictures of a Gato class sub on a large dio board. The sub has been stranded/beached at a small inlet, the sea is out in this dio. Not happy with it, no matter what I did it just doesn't look right to me...could be me.

Si, I rarely, if ever criticise other folks models, but you seem to want some pointers/suggestions. But be assured I am in no way belittling your great dio., just some neutral observations.....Here goes.....!

I think there would be little, if any marine growth topside, as it looks like the sub's deck would be way above the high tide mark.

The sub possibly sits too upright....the erosion of the sand underneath would cause the vessel to take on a lean.

Also, can I suggest the sub should be a lot lower in the sand?

The base is a superb bit of dio. work...nice one!

I hope you take the above as an honest attempt to help and not nit picking.......members who know me know that's not my way.

i agree with ron superb work the rust looks quality but i would take what ron has said and learn for the next dio...ive learnt so much from this site thats what its really good for we all have our strengths in this game

I agree with ole, the trees look too shiny and plastic in the pictures, maybe a coat of dull laquer or varnish might help? Other than that I like it :)

I think this is a smart way to recycle a kit if you're not happy with the paint job :)

I used a technique that gave a similar effect when I had to create a sea bed for a game of dungeons and dragons a few years ago. Got some cheap ship, boat and anchor ornaments and then covered them in PVA then dunked them in a sand and bicarb mixture, when they were dry I just dribbled thinned acrylic browns and reds and greens over them (like weathering), then added some railway scatter to give a seaweed effect. Was simple but surprisingly effective.
 
A nice diorama Si. As the others have said, the trees look a little shiny and plastic, but otherwise I reckon this is a super build.

It's not bad, but not great either, the image in my head did not turn out the way I expected...that's modelling for you lol.

Spot on Ron, the effect was a crusty rusty hulk, with slight green growth around the base of the sub at high tide, the green growth was just general growth being on the inlet side and not seaward side, don't think kit worked too well. I cut the model down and you're spot on it should have been much lower. I appreciate your words, I knew what I wanted to do but, for some reason, it just didn't work lol.

Cheers John, in retrospect the rust seems to be over done on the upper deck and sail, maybe less crustiness would have looked better. Glad you like it though.

Correct, I seemed to loose interest with this piece and left the palm tress alone, was going to wash the trunks and leaves but just could not be bothered.

Ta Colin, I just seemed to loose interest in this piece, moved on to other projects. The trees are a let down, they look good on the board but as you say need toning down and distressing in places...maybe one day I may go back to it.

Thanks Joe, I guess I maybe a bit hard on myself and the model, but you know yourself, when something seems wrong it niggles you... :)
