Just a couple of shots for those who are interested of the new TV screen that was fitted to the ship during the recent dry dock.

It is actually a LCD screen and comprises of some 400 odd individual modules, each about the size of a large laptop screen and each one has its own processor and motherboard. All the modules are controlled from a nearby central processing unit. The modules kick out so much heat that the frame contains it's own three stand alone air conditioning units.

The last picture shows the modules being fitted to the frame. You can also make out the internal ladder, necessary to gain access to the lower modules from the inside. I've been in it, it is quite amazing!

wow. pretty impressive there Richard. make sure you get some pics of it in action!!!....erm now this might be the stupid question but im sure a few people might think it but not want to sound stupid of they ask it...

what if it rains/gets wet?

It is a weatherproof enclosure and the modules are designed for outdoor use. Along the sides are the speakers which are also weatherproof units.

So you can laze in the pool with your Pina Colada as you watch "Pirates of the Carribbean"on the 20 foot high screen above you! Whatever turns you on I guess!!

It looks enormous Richard,something else to go wrong ? all of these luxury gizmo's that people expect these days ! ever thought about a model boating pool on board ? one U.S Carrier crew member used to fly his radio controlled aircraft from the flight deck,a bit unfortunate if he had to ditch the model in the water ?

Barry, You wouldn't beleive the technology that supports the things that we do nowadays.

We already have four pools and each one has it's own sophisticated water treatment system for maintaining the quality of the water.

Not a great deal to go wrong with an LCD screen, if the backlights go you just replace them. Last time i checked, for a screen of a similar size for a nightclub was around £200,000.(I'm imagining about 8mtrs x 6mtrs)

does it matter what kind of ship you work on Richard? with you job im sure it dosnt matter wheather you work on a cruise ship or a distoyer.

My qualifications are valid on any merchant vessel but not a navy vessel.

So I could work on anything from a harbour tug to a dredger to a cruise liner to a container ship.

Assuming, that is, someone wanted to give me a job!!
