Have a look at some of the card model ships nowadays produced by people like Marcle Models.

They are really amazing and I have no idea how you get the proper hull shapes from flat card. I'll root some pictures out later of one I saw a while ago, I think it was the Prinz Eugen, which still amazes me when I look at it.
