discussion Paint removal off of models-Dettol

Hi All,


Well im currently building a Airfix VW beetle and had issues with the paint due to where i have to spray at the moment.


im on my 2nd-3rd re-spray now all of which had slightly different issues all of which i know why now...


I needed a easy way of stripping the paint off the kit i had previously used Wilko Varnish stripper which sounds crazy as eventually it should melt the plastic by rights but if used quickly and used alongside water it worked fine but at £4-£5 its on the steep side.

I used this neat as if its mixed with water your paint will go gooey, Soaked the model for 2hours using a toothbrush in those 2 hours to scrub the surface, This had stripped the model back to bare plastic with no damage.... Perfect!


This Costs at the most £3 but i got mine from B&M for 500ml £2.39 and the benefits are its a handy product to have around the house! Good excuse to suggest to the other half

P.S i know some of you guys use fairy power spray but this was what i found locally available

Great idea, well found out, will give it a try next time a screw up a paint job..........highly likely


A lot of peeps on here use power spray (didn't work for me + I had to doing the cleaning with it ) also brake fluid.....pricey.....ish, I've used nail varnish remover, but I think this may affect the plastic over time.


Are you using enamels or acrylics?

No worries steve i haven't got cats but i have other pets but i made sure to use it in the shed well out of the way!

I noticed that dave and i thought i would try and find some but no joy but found this at a good price


I was removing Halfords primer+Plastikote paint+Mr Hobby UV Cut clear, All of which work fine together normally im just spraying in the wrong temperatures.


The way the dettol worked on that combination in a instant and within 2 hours fully stripped i would imagine that if the enamel paint was fresh it would do just as good but don't hold me on that as i tend not to paint a model entirely in enamel and just use enamel for the odd detail etc..

I've gone over to acrylics now, going away from enamels, too many cock ups recently!


I'm going to use enamels for the detail as you do.
