A small question about paint types. Is it safe to use plasticote paints on plastic models or halfords car paints?

No Ray I hated the stuff after one trial.


I use an airbrush for most things everything except tiddly bits. For that I use acrylic model paints as they are thin and do not obliterate detail. I suspect that they are exoensive compared to model paints. A large bottle of 200ml primer which will probably cover 15 1/48 models costs about £6:50. For a 1/48 Merlin a large model I used for the main colour well under one and a half bottles 17ml size and that was for two coats.


With an airbrush I found it gives you complete control over how you want to use paints. With cans of paint there is no control at all press the button and that is it.


Halford's car paints I could not say as I have only used them on cars to touch up cellulose paintwork.

Yes, if you prime first, but make sure you build up the coats, light passes or you can tend to get runs.

That is my opinion Ray obviously. But I bet others use Plasticote it so I would wait until you get another view. We all get wedded to our own stuff.

I have used plasticote and I found it crap to be honest-it sprays too thickly and unevenly, even with shaking for 10 mins and making sure it is at room temp. Not a fan, prefer car paint-although if you go for certain metallics make sure they look okay, these are designed for 1/1 coverage so can look well out of scale.

Have a go at Vallejo Ray. They do both airbrushing and hand brushing and have a vast array of colours.


They. have a dropper on each bottle which is easy to dispense and also keeps the paint from drying out so quickly.

That is just my opinion in what I found, despite mixing well they seemed sticky and clagy plus-I felt I had no control in building up the layers.
