Good pics Adzam - particularly the last one! Many of the models you have shown are scratch built and some have sailed at Inverleith for many years. You'll need to introduce 'Hazel' at the next meet!

re picture 6 - It's a model of a World War 2 American design for a hybrid carrier/battleship that was never built. Apparently the Japanese built a few (Ise and Hyuga) but they were never succesful. The Royal Navy also looked at the concept I am told. Hasegawa make (or used to make) plastic kits of these. There is a web-site where someone has done a similar job based on a Bismarck hull!

Hi guys, The hybrid carrier/cruiser was built by Douglas Kinloch from info found and as the type was never actually built in the USN he has called her the USS Stark scale 1/144th . The Russian river patrol boat is also his. Other grey boats [small ships]including the landing craft were built by Davie Jack to a scale of 1/24.

Nice pics.....I have some pics of the 1995 V.E. Day meet somewhere held By Colwyn Bay Model Boat Club.....That was an excellent day out, plenty of boats and Loads of people.....will have to dig them out and post on here....The event made the local press too...!!!

Hi I'm the builder of the Hybrid carrier.

It was built from my own plan to 1/144th scale and represents (as George says) a design that the US Navy thought about for about 15- 20 years but never finally built. The name USS Stark came from Rear Admiral Stark USN who headed the Navy Bureau of ship design and was an advocate of the principle of the hybrid.

The idea was to combine a 6 or 8 inch gun cruiser and a light carrier on the same hull and to benefit from the spotting and over -the -horizon capability of the aircraft and the punch of the guns. Mainly in Pacific based commerce raiding and convoy escort.

In the end the US Navy decided that rather than be a jack-of-all-trades, she would be master of none and focussed on successful conventional cruiser and carrier designs.

As George says, the same thinking was hapening in the Japanese Admiralty and they actually followed through with the Hyuga and Tone classes of crusers, the main difference being thier relianace on seaplanes rather than a carrier deck.

The US Navy was proven to be correct in thier assessment though as the Japanese ships were outclassed as cruisers and as carriers.

Getting the same problem Wonwinglo described some time ago ...

rectangle with a red cross in it instead of the images.

Image properties seem to have got lost .. right click> properties

All very strange.

Any ideas fellows?

Iain - I'm having the same problem with those early pics. I think they were hosted on the UKhost4U site - & I can no longer access that site. May have something to do with it. Right or left clicking on the red x doesn't help either.
