I have been using artist pastels for exhaust and gun smoke. I tend to make a powder with sandpaper and then I brush that onto the model, blowing off any excess just before the final matt coat that seals it.

I am considering getting pigments instead.

Are these used in the same way as I describe I use pastels?

I am considering the Vallejo Smoke Black, Natural Iron Oxide and Burnt Umber as I think they will handle most of these effects I want.
