First of all thanks to Alex at Realitycraft.com for supplying me with a copy of RC Flight Master Extreme64 to review.

What’s it say on the box:

Fly a massive selection of over 50 radio control helis, planes & gliders with unbelievable realism on your PC.

And it does just that, from a complete RC novice flyers point of view (me) this is a great way to get used to flying RC aircraft without the expense of crashing them and getting disheartened every time you do, not only can you use your keyboard or joypad/stick but to get even more realism you also have the option to buy either a parallel or USB interface that will enable you to use any standard TX controller that has a trainer socket like the Skysport series 4 & 6.

The sim starts with several options, these include co-ordination trainer

training.jpg

The co-ordination trainer gives you the chance to practice your aircraft control by presenting you with several tests, I must say as a novice I found this feature very useful, but I’m sure that even the most advanced people would get a benefit from it as well.

As well as the usual options on any menu, about, exit ect. Are your different flight modes, 1 user, 2 users and white knight & space ship one, you can also change your graphics options like reflections, object detail, shadows and more, I had all these set on full running at 1280x1024, and my P4 2Ghz, 1GB ram with a 256MB Gforce 6200 and didn’t have a problem with it, in fact I also briefly tried it on a P3 with only a 64MB card using the default settings and it still ran very well, so you don’t need an all singing all dancing machine to use it.

You have a 2 users option, this gives 2 people the chance to fly at the same time using a split screen mode, personally this is something that I would never use as I hate games that use this mode, but like I said that’s just me personally I think my problem is I spend too much time watching the other person, but it’s still a great feature to have.

2users.jpg

White Knight and Space Ship One Mode

Taken from the help file it says “Very similar to Single Pilot flight, this mode enables you to launch and control the SpaceShipOne aircraft from its mothership - WhiteKnight. This differs from normal Single Pilot flight in that the aircraft automatically take-off and fly by themselves. When you are ready - press the 'Fire Weapon' key to launch and take control of SpaceShipOne. Then use the 'Start Engine' key to power the rocket motor of SpaceShipOne.”

When you choose single pilot mode you are taken straight to using one of the trainer planes, which isn’t a bad place to start, by simple pressing esc you are taken to more options, and this is where this sim comes in to it’s own

ingame_options.jpg

from here you can choose to fly another aircraft, fly from a different location, change the weather conditions even simulate different failure conditions.

flightcond.jpg

Having equipment fail is part of any RC model but with RC Flight Master you are able to simulate engine, structural, servo, gear and transmitter failures, together with the weather condition settings that gives you an unlimited number of possible flying situations

fuelefail.jpg

You can choose anyone of over 50 different aircraft, spitfire, Boeing 747, Hurricane, F117A, Bell 427 and Comanche are just a few of what’s available, what’s more each aircraft behaves different, flying a Lancaster Bomber is completely different to flying a Mig-17 which would be he same in real life, and if your not happy with the default settings and you want to see how an aircraft would handle if you moved the centre of gravity, give it more engine power or even changed it’s aerodynamics then the physics menu will let you do that, giving you even more options to enhance your flight realism.

landscape.jpg

The are several locations you can fly from, it comes with 3 3d landscapes, desert, farm and medieval and 3 realistic photo sceneries, and what's more you have the ability to import your own scenes using the free download available called Photo Tool, I am going to have more of a play with this and will post about that later, but it's really good that you can go and take pictures of your local park or place where you like to fly and add it to the sim to practise with :)

And finally tech support, I had the need to use it unfortunately, they responded in good time and with the suggestions I needed to do to get it working, after a couple of days of this and still not being able to get it to work, I formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows and it still didn't work :( I must say they were very good with the help I sent several emails and it turns out it was nothing to do with the sim, my graphics card had fried :( got a new one worked fine and I'm glad it did because I would have missed out on well wrote software.

So is this the best RC flight simulator available? I don’t know I haven’t tried them all, but from what I’ve seen if I was to try others I would always be comparing them to this, I’ve been thinking of buying a plane for a while the only thing that puts me off is the expense of crashing and having repairs, at lease this way I can get used to flying in different conditions and crash as much as I like, it might not stop me crashing when flying a RC plane but it will give me an advantage that I would never have had, and the first time I landed without crashing gave me such a sense of achievement I had a smile from ear to ear :)

In conclusion this gives the beginner a distinct advantage and confidence to go it alone and it gives the more advanced people a chance to experiment with things that you just couldn’t do under normal circumstances, all in all a great piece of software and something you would come back to time and time again.

Like Phoenix said you don't need a high spec pc for this, in fact if you don't meet the minimum requirements then it's probably time for an upgrade anyway, chances are you wouldn't be able to buy such a low spec pc now.

Best thing to do if download the plane master demo that's available and try before you buy, then you know for sure it will run, you can get it from here

Realitycraft are now registering users for RC Flightmaster, this entitles you to some great downloads for this superb software, all you need is your disc code number.

I tried the demo, it downloaded very easily and played very smoothly.

It is undoubtedly an excellent tool for any trainee RC flyers who want to be in with a chance of their pride and joy surviving the first flight. Unlike mine!!

*** You want to try the Lancaster Richard,it really is something else to handle, was having a few circuits myself this evening,I just love this simulator.

Is that on the Demo or do you have the full version?

What is the best way of buying this package, can you purchase directly from the Realitycraft site? I'd be suprised to find it in a high street shop.

Go here http://www.cmldistribution.co.uk/shop.php?menu=INFO and find you local supplier, before the review I rang a few people and the R/C Racing in Elland had it, but he only had the full package @ £99.99.

One thing I did notice even though the suppliers are on the distrbutors list not all of them had herd of it as it's still quite new

Thanks John,

I don't think I'll be going for the full package but I'll start with them.

Yes thats correct, when the first system called 'Flight Plane Master' came out it was reviewed in PC Pilot magazine and was made available as a download which you paid for in the usual way on the site page, now Realitycraft have preferred to sell their latest product 'Flight Master' as a CDR Disc,Perkins distribution handle the sales to the various and many model shop outlets, the reason why some are not aware of the product is that they do not read their news releases !

With software piracy at an all time high many are now changing to discs rather than a download as a security precaution.

I've download the extra's available from the memebers area, 2 new aircraft a Hughes-200 and Yak-55, also there is a new Snow Fields scene, and an update that adds lighting and water effects.

Hopefully they will keep this area updated on a regular basis, I always think it's a good sign to keep getting product updates, it show's the authors haven't just put something togeather and forgot about it.

Hi all,

Just to keep you updated - I have just bought the RC HeliMaster Package today, made by the same company, so I can get some practice in on Heli's over the winter months. The set up screens are pretty much the same as the screen shots already shown. This package as you have guessed though is purely for Helicopters - 8 different models to choose from too.

This is the complete package which includes the 6 function Transmitter - I bought it in the new model shop that has opened near me in Rhos On Sea.

The best bit was the price - £19.99p

They have all the other versions in stock too.

regards.......Mark.

£19.99 including the transmitter? that's a really good price
It certainly is John, when I saw it I jumped at the chance to get it straight away, having remembered the review on here - I didn't want to miss out.

The computer I am running it on is my old machine - specs as follows

AMD Athlon XP1500 CPU

1Gb Ram

NVIDIA Geforce mx 100/200 graphics card (64 Mb RAM)

As you can see - old spec by todays standards but it runs fine on there,

as the screenshot shows.

I have managed some spectacular crashes too but all good fun !! :D

Mark.

Hi All,

Just to let you know, I am now having a lot of fun with this programme and am now flying around quite nicely doing circuits etc.

It is certainly worth tweaking the settings to something you are comfortable with - especially the windspeed and air pressure settings, it does make quite a difference when flying your chosen Helicopter. I haven't really tried the other settings yet.

One thing to watch is how far away you fly away, as just like real models, it gets harder to see the further away you get and if you go too far, the programme acts like you have flown out of radio range and your model will crash !!

For £20 - this has to be one of the best bits of Software I have bought this year, although I am finding the Chinook a bit tricky to fly !! More Practice needed with this one I think :D

The SA-365 Dauphin is my favourite on here.

Regards........Mark.

Just another update for you,

I am now greasing around the skies as if I had never been away from flying R/C Heli's - given the bad weather we have had over the last couple of summers I have not had much chance to fly but this programme certainly makes up for it. Hopefully the weather will be better next year and mine will be out airbourne again.

In the meantime I can sit in the comfort of a warm house practising my flying - no numb cold hands here !!

A cool feature I have noticed on this programme is the "Low fuel" warning which will come up at the bottom of the screen after a few minutes flying around - you then get about a minute to sort out your landing before the "Out of fuel" warning shows and your heli drops out of the sky. (You can still do auto-rotations if you have the height or are facing into the wind)

If you land successfully before the out of fuel warning comes up you will be treated to seeing the rotors wind down & stop when it does run out of fuel. It is then just a matter of hitting the return key to start all over again with a fresh tank of fuel.

Some screen shots of the SA-365 below for you - I love flying this one as the handling is superb - and yes the undercarriage does tuck away too.

Pic 1 is the landing approach & Pic 2 is the landing right at my feet !!

Pic 3 is another landing with the nosewheels just about to touch down

Pic 4 is the Rotors stopped having just run out of fuel & finally

Pic 5 is a flyby with the undercarriage up.

Regards........Mark.

You mean that someone can actually fly the heli? I thought that it was a glitch:grinball2:

I have the older version and plan to train for a fw190 test flight next spring!

Hi Jeff,

Yes I can actually fly the heli's and a lot of fun they are too, Love your comment though, that certainly made me laugh :D

Good luck with the FW-190 - get some screen shots up if you can.

Regards.......Mark.
