discussion re-shaping plastic parts help.

Hi guys I need a little help here, I have just attached one of the main handrails on my Dora hull and I have found that one end is warped, is there anyway to straighten it out? I was thinking about trying to heat the area up with a hair dryer and try to gently push it back into position, can anyone suggest a different method unfortunately it has already been attached thanks guys and gals.

I was going to suggest a hair dryer Scott, it's the only thing I'd trust, plus you can see what's happening, and are in control, have you a soldering iron, if so that also helps with smaller pieces.

How about putting them in hot water Scott?


Then gently bend them back into shape, perhaps under a book to get them straight again.

Thanks guys but they have already been attached and cant be removed might try the hairdryer and if iam not getting anywhere I will get some round styrene strip.

I have just had the same problem Scott.


I used a hair dryer I put my thumb near the heat to make sure the plastic was not overheated as then real problems occur with very interesting shapes. Found that after getting into shape it is best ti secure in that position until the plastic has returned to room temperature.


I think a lot depends on the plastic. Airfix seem to use grade one plastic ie stuff never used before and this is very soft and pliable. Some not sure what grade are brittle Nearer the B & Q black bucket status. The Airfix is easy but needs restraining afterwards.


Also found it is better to do it by minor amounts then repeat.


Also tried small pieces under a lighter (at a distance and this worked quite well.

Fuse wire works pretty good as well, and looks great.
