After finishing my Hurricane group build entry I felt the urge to cut and glue some plastic while waiting for the D-Day GB to start.
Nothing in the stash was calling out to me and not wanting to wait for anything to be delivered I popped into my local Hobbycraft.
I wanted a quick out of the box build and found this which I decided fitted the bill :smiling4:

It was newly tooled in 1999 an era which saw Revell bring out some very nice kits. It has gone through a few reboxings since with this version coming out in 2013.

I started last night before I thought to take some pictures but here are the runners and already removed parts.

Instructions are old style but are now printed on glossy paper, unfortunately the colour guide is black and white and the call outs are all in Revell paint numbers :rolling:

Two options both of the USAAF 8th AF, 56 FG based at Boxted in 1945. Either a 63 Sqn dark blue/light blue camo over aluminium nmf or a 62 Sqn grey/green camo over aluminium nmf.
I will probably go with the blue but I am quite drawn by the grey/green version but I will decide later.

Decals look good and are printed in Italy, Cartograph?

The kit has some very nice detail but it also has a lot of flash so is going to need a lot of cleanup

Another update soon/ thanks for looking :thumb2:

A very nice choice Geoff. From what I've heard, it's actually supposed to be one of the better 1/72 P-47 kits, or at least it was in it's day. Have fun with that flash though!

Cheers Arnie :thumb2:

It’s got some nice detail, hopefully it will build up nicely

Geoff.
Very nice I just bought that same one a a couple weeks ago. Front row please.

me personally I think both 1/72 Thunderbolts Academy kits are better. I bought this one to compare which one but by just looking at the Revell I still like the Academy’s better. Just my opinion. This one is really nice wish Airfix would update there’s.

That's good to know Lee - personally I've not actually built either so I can't really comment. I do have a Tamiya 1/72 Razerback in the stash though.

I’ve not seen it but had heard the Tamiya version was the best of the bunch.

I will have a look at Academy though as I’m sure I’ll be building more P-47s in the future :smiling4:

This one is ok though but is spoiled by the amount of flash on it. Earlier boxings may be better in that regard

Nothing much to show yet, cleaning up the parts is an ongoing process :rolling:

Off on me hols tomorrow so there will be a bit of a hiatus in the build :thumb2:

Looks an OK kit and the clean up of the flash is just time. Decals 18 and 23, with the cut off bits, look odd but there must be a reason

Yes Jim your right about flash, I’m not too bothered by it really as I find cleaning it up quite therapeutic :hungry:

The cut off bits are to conform around vents on the side of the fuselage, something to do with the exhaust/super charger system I think.

Now I’ve finished my Typhoon for the D-Day group build I’m trying to finish off some of my “shelf of doom” occupants starting with this one.

The cockpit has been done and glued into place.

I’ve added some Eduard photo etch seat belts.

I’ve closed it up now and completed the wings, engine cowl and engine so off to the spray booth next 😊

Hopefully another update soon.

Thanks for looking 👍

Thanks Joe 😊

This is a lovely little kit, one of Revell’s better efforts I would say and not bad for £10.

Finally managed to get the priming done 😊

IMG_3867.jpg

There are a couple of seams which will need a bit of filler and the radiator exhaust is particularly bad but I’ll use a bit of thin plasticard to cover this.

IMG_3868.jpg
Once these bits are sorted it will be onto the fun part, the camo painting. I’ve just got to figure out what colours to use 🤔

Thanks for looking 👍

Geoff.

Always nice to get to the primer stage . Not many issues to sort out. Like you I use thin styrene to cover up bad seams where possible - easier and a neater job than filling and sanding. Looking forward to the camo.

Thanks Jim 👍

Yes it’s great for gap filling too especially wing roots on aircraft, a must have product in my opinion 😊
