Hi all can anyone suggest something that is effective for stripping acrylic paint from a kit, ive heard some folks mention Dettol? but does it work and how do you do it.

some people swear by fairy powerspray............i like mr muscle oven cleaner (put the kit in a plastic bag, good helping of the oven cleaner, seal it, come back hour later, give it a wash and dont brethe anything in!),..................easiest of all is brake fluid....just dunk it and leave it, wash it when its done.....usual safety precautions

If you have any Vallejo airbrush Cleaner this will remove it quickly. I use an A4 sheet of plastic to test on. When it gets in a mess a few drops of Vallejo a sheet of kitchen roll and the acrylic paint (water based) just rubs down 4 or 5 thicnesses of paint in double quick time..


IPA is quite good as well but not as affective as the above.

Sorry, but my computer skills are even worse than my modelling, and I don't know how to post links


I've always used spray on oven cleaner, which is hazardous. I hadn't heard of Fairy Powerspray till now, but it looks like it will do the job. Is it easier to use, ie, less harmful, than oven cleaner?


Whichever you use, just spray on, wait for it to soak in, scrub gently with an old toothbrush, and rinse with plenty of water.


If I have old dried up paint tins, or finished ones, I scrape out as much paint as possible, then strip them back to bare metal with oven cleaner. Then they can be used for my own mixtures

Ive used Dettol, it might not be the best.. But it smells better than oven cleaner.. .

Thanks for the advice will get that today, and give it a try, one question with the fairy power spray do you have to scrub the paint off or can you just run it under the tap?

I've used the Dettol method and it stripped the acrylic paint OK.


Placed the part, a car body, into a plastic container and covered with Dettol so it was totally immersed, sealed the container lid and left for 24 hours.


It needed a little agitation with a soft toothbrush but after @ 20 mins the shell was free of paint and back to new.

Apply the power spray wait a minute or two paint should start to peel/bubble rinse or spray with water and the paint can be rubbed off
