discussion Spitfire painting - "dark green"...

OK - so I'm building this ICM 1/48 Spitfire XVI - the colour conversion chart suggests that the dark green I ought to use (on the upper fuselage camo) is equivalent to Tamiya XF27 "Black Green" (exhibit A: http://images.channeladvisor.com/Sell/SSProfiles/22001127/Images/63/TA81727.jpg) but with the pot in front of me it looks *very* dark indeed.

I am sure on my other little Spitfire I did I just used XF26 "Deep Green" or XF61 "Dark Green" (really can't remember).

I am sure there's at least one expert on here who could perhaps advise on which of these three apparently similar colours I should opt for!

I thought Spitfire green was Humbrol 30, Tamiya XF-61 and Vallejo Model Air 12

From the top of the pots XF27 looks pretty similar to be honest, but I have XF61 anyway so will probably go with that unless anyone else chips in! Thanks...

You guys are really specialising in cans of worms recently! I used to use Humbrol 30 too but apparently it's too blue. The RAF Dark Green was apparently more of an Olive colour. Intentional use of "apparently" as I'm not a believer in beating myself up about model colours. On my rare forays into RAF schemes I now use Xtracrylix version of Dark Green,lightened for shading with a drop or two of yellow,which looks fine to me.

There was a long,occasionally heated and very entertaining debate about this on Britmodeller a year or two ago. Good luck finding the thread with the search facility!

Heated debate on Britmodeller? Surely not lol!!

Although I would go with the lighter of the two Tamiya colours - I'd say XF61 was a little too "black"...

If using Humbrol you may find that their 163 Dark Green is now a better option for RAF Green

Tamiya recommend AS-30, AS-31, & AS-32, in their spray range, for the Green, Ocean Grey, and Sea Grey Medium, respectively; in the standard 10mil brushable pots, these are matched by three new colours, XF081, XF082 & XF083.
