Hi Guys me again , I`ve got a Tamiya 1/48 spitfire to make and have a few questions AGAIN - after watching a few demo`s on youtube the guy airbrushed the plane with acrylics then spray glossed the plane , then weathered it ie- a dark wash in all the panel lines nooks & crannys etc , I understand this bit because it makes it easy to wipe the excess off , and then finnished it with a spray coat of matt , my 1st question is - whats the best type and make of clear gloss and matt to cover acrylic paint and is it ok to go over the decals and is this the way to do it , if not what do you guys recommend to get a nice gentle weathered finnish,

Q2 - there seems to be hundreds of 1/48 spitfires available but I would love to get a 1/48 Hurricane , can anyone point me in the right direction,

Hi Richy. First the gloss. The absolute dog's danglies is actually a floor polish called Klear made by Johnsons. You need the old formula still available in some supermarkets and household stores or,failing that ,online. There are other threads about Klear on the site,as well as some retailers who still have it.

Once you have got the paint on your model and it is nicely dry and cured (24 Hrs even for acrylics) give the whole model a coat of Klear. I brush it on with a wide,soft,good quality brush. There is no need to spray it as it is a self levelling polish,no brush strokes left behind.You may need a couple of coats to give a nice shiny finish.

Once this has dried (I allow 12 hours) you can apply your decals. Applying these on the gloss surface will eliminate the dreaded silvering.

Once the decals are dry you can seal them in and protect them with one more coat of Klear.

Now you can start weathering. The Klear coat must be well dry or your weathering pigments will react with it and you will have a VERY dirty airplane (ask me how I know!)

You are quite correct that the gloss coat will protect all your underlying hard work and make excess weathering, or cock ups, easier to remove.

When you are delighted with your results you can give the model its final coat of varnish.This may be matt,silk or even gloss.

I use the Vallejo silk or matt varnishes. They work for me.
